SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The UC Davis baseball team saw its rally fall one run short in a 5-4 loss at No. 21 ranked Cal Poly on Thursday night at Baggett Stadium in both teams' Big West Conference opener.

The Aggies (10-13, 0-1 Big West) scored four runs on nine hits with no errors while the Mustangs (18-6, 1-0) posted five runs on 10 hits with one error.

Cal Poly starting pitcher Joey Wagman (6-1), the Big West's leader in strikeouts,  earned the win after allowing four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk in six innings. UC Davis starter Harry Stanwyck (3-3) picked up the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 5.2 innings. The Aggies' bullpen did not allow a run for the second straight game but their offense couldn't finish off the comeback.

The nationally ranked Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the second inning and two more in the third.

But the Aggies got a couple back in the fourth. After a ground out, second baseman Steven Patterson singled and moved to third when first baseman Nick Lynch doubled down the left field line. Just two pitches later, designated hitter Cameron Olsen drove in both baserunners with a single up the middle.

Cal Poly pushed its lead to three with a run in the fifth but the Aggies weren't finished yet either. Catcher Spencer Brann doubled to lead off with seventh inning and scored when shortstop Tino Lipson tripled to wall in right center. Right fielder John Williams, batting leadoff in the game, followed with a single through the left side on a full count to drive in Lipson.

After Williams' single, Cal Poly pulled Wagman and brought on closer Reed Reilly who recorded his seventh save of the season with three no-hit innings.

The Aggies had a chance in the ninth, when, with one out, Lipson reached and advanced to second on a throwing error. But Reilly got Williams to line out left and struck out pinch hitter Austin Logan on a full count to end the game.

Patterson finished with a team-best three hits and a run scored while Lipson added two hits. Olson tallied two RBIs. Cal Poly left fielder Jordan Ellis went 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI. First baseball Tommy Pluschkell added three hits and a RBI.

Game two of the three-game series is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch tomorrow. Spencer Koopmans will be on the mound for the Aggies.
