SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Seven different UC Davis batters registered hits on the day, but host Cal Poly rallied back from a two-run deficit with a big fourth inning as the No. 5-ranked Mustangs held off the visiting Aggies for a 5-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.

UC Davis fell to 12-11 overall and 0-2 in Big West Conference play with the loss, looking to salvage a win in the third game of the series with senior right-hander Evan Wolf (2-1, 4.76a ERA) taking the mound on Sunday afternoon (March 30) at 1 p.m. Cal Poly, which will counter with Casey Bloomquist (5-0, 1.82 ERA), improved to 22-4 overall and 2-0 in league action with the win.

After the Mustangs broke the seal on a scoreless draw thanks to a second-inning RBI single by Chris Hoo, the Aggies broke open their half of the third off starter Justin Calomeni with their first runs of the series thanks to three straight hits. Senior Steven Patterson tied the game with a two-out single up the middle to score Evan Heptig and, after a wild pitch moved Patterson into scoring position, Nick Lynch gave UC Davis the lead with a single to right to make it 2-1.

Spencer Henderson kept the rally going, following with a run-scoring double to right centerfield for the 3-1 advantage.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Cal Poly rallied back with a three-run fourth to take the lead for good. After a lead-off walk to Brian Mundell, back-to-back walks with two outs loaded the bases for the Mustangs, who then tied the game on back-to-back balks. That set the stage for Hoo, who waited out the wildness to rap a single back through the box, scoring Peter Van Gansen for the go-ahead run and make it 4-3. Hoo finished 3-for-4 to lead all players.

Tim Wise added an RBI triple in the sixth -- eventually thrown out at the plate on the play trying for an inside-the-park home run -- scoring Hoo with an insurance run as Taylor Chris (2-0) entered in relief and retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced over a scoreless final five innings, striking out four, to nail down the win.

The Aggies mounted another rally in the fifth, only to come up empty, as Seth Batty led-off the frame by being hit by a pitch and moved up 90 feet on Adam Young's single to left, knocking Calomeni from the game. After a Patterson sacrifice moved both into scoring position, Lynch drew a walk to load the bases, but Chris got a strikeout and a ground ball to end the threat.

UC Davis could manage just one more baserunner the rest of the game as Patterson reached on an error in the seventh, but was stranded at first.

Sophomore right-hander Max Cordy (1-1) suffered the loss for the Aggies, allowing three earned on three hits over 3.2 innings of work, walking five and striking out three. Spencer Koopmans and Orlando Razo held down the fort to keep UC Davis within striking distance, combining to allow one run on five hits while striking out three in 4.1 innings of relief.

Young (14 games) and Patterson (11) each extended their respective reached base safely streaks with base hits on the day, while Patterson's RBI single in the third extended his hitting streak to a team-best five games.
