Senior Trevor Thornton yielded just five hits and fanned nine batters in a 99-pitch complete game outing, leading UC Davis to a 7-1 win over Grand Canyon in a California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball game at Dobbins Stadium Sunday.

The Aggies improve to 18-12 on the season and 12-8 in conference play. Grand Canyon falls to 23-14 overall and 14-13 in CCAA action.

"It was a grind-out performance for Trevor," said UC Davis head coach Rex Peters. "He didn't have his best stuff, but he kept throwing strikes and the defense backed him up. He threw quick innings.

"Good pitchers find ways to win even without their best stuff. It's the kind of outing you get from him."

The outfield trio of Dustin Soderman, Robby Tulk and Kyle Irving each had two hits to lead the Aggies offensively. First baseman David Butterworth launched a solo shot in the second to put UC Davis on the board.

For Grand Canyon, Brian Smith, Ryan Bethel, Greg Serrano, David Worrell and Justin Dehmer each collected hits. Dehmer accounting the Antelopes' only run, sending a two-out solo home run to left in the third inning.

The Aggies enjoyed their biggest inning in the eighth when Ryan Coultas' leadoff double set up a four-run rally. Kamigawachi followed with a single, then Butterworth was hit by a Bethel pitch to load the bases. Andy Reisinger grounded to GCU third baseman Greg Serrano who opted for a play at home to force Coultas. However, the Aggie shortstop beat the throw and Serrano's skipped loose from catcher Joey Reiman, allowing Kamigawachi to come home.

A sacrifice fly by Ross Warner and an RBI single from Soderman completed the four-run Aggie eighth.

Bethel took the loss for GCU, surrendering 10 hits and seven runs in 7.1 innings of work. Thornton also allowed just one walk against his nine strikeouts.

UC Davis returns to action with a four-game series at Cal St. San Bernardino from April 4-6.
