SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Dave McKae threw eight shutout innings and David Huffman collected three hits to lead UC Davis to a 4-1 victory over Sacramento State in a nonconference baseball game Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.

With the win the Aggies take the first of a three-game series and improve to 15-10 on the season. The victory also marks the third win in as many game against the Hornets this season. Sacramento State falls to 8-18-1 overall.

McKae was masterful all afternoon as he worked the first eight innings, scattering five hits, walking just one while striking out eight. After allowing a one-out double in the first to Matt Wilson, McKae retired the next eight Hornets until Wilson's single to lead off the fourth inning.

McKae, who improved to 5-1 this season, only found trouble in that fourth inning when the Hornets put runners on second and third with one out. But he got Pedro Santiago to line out to Michael Jacobellis at second and then induced Matt Keiper to an inning-ending groundout to third to escape with the shutout intact.

While McKae was silencing the Hornet bats, the Aggies were chipping away at Sacramento State starter Ethan Katz. After working out of trouble in the first three innings, Katz did not escape the fourth when Huffman's two-out, RBI single to center scored Dan Baldini with the game's first run. The Aggies struck again in the fifth when they chased Katz with the bases loaded and no outs as Warren Rosebrock came on in relief. Rosebrock allowed just one run, charged to Katz, before getting out of the inning.

UC Davis put the game away in the eighth with two more runs. A Tyler LaTorre sacrifice fly and Huffman's second RBI of the afternoon was more than enough for the Aggies.

Eddie Gamboa came on for McKae to start the ninth and allowed a run on Taylor Watanabe's two-out double that scored Santiago to break the shutout.

In addition to the victory on Friday, the win clinched the inaugural Causeway Cup for UC Davis. The Causeway Cup is an all-sports challenge between the two schools.

The three-game series continues on Saturday at Dobbins Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
