SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The UC Davis baseball team jumped out to an early lead but Sacramento State broke a tie with two runs in the eighth inning and the Aggies lost to their Causeway Cup rival, 6-4, on Tuesday afternoon at John Smith Field.

The Aggies (10-16) scored four runs on eight hits with one error while the Hornets (15-13) tallied six runs on 11 hits with one error. After recording three runs on five hits through the first two innings, UC Davis posted just one run on three hits in the final seven frames.

Sacramento State reliever Brandon Creel (4-1) picked up the win after tossing 1.1 innings of one-hit ball over the seventh and eighth innings. UC Davis freshman reliever Zach Williams (0-1) suffered his first career loss after giving up two runs on two hits and one walk in 1.2 innings.

The Aggies jumped on Sacramento State starter Hunter Greenwood early, getting two hits off the junior in the first inning before hanging a crooked number on the scoreboard in the second.

After a strikeout to start the second, catcher Spencer Brann singled through the right side and moved to second on center fielder Kevin Barker's single through the left side. First baseman Austin Logan was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a passed ball in the next at-bat brought home Brann from third. Left fielder Austin March hit a deep foul ball to left which was caught, but Barker tagged up from third for the second run of the inning. Shortstop Tino Lipson followed with a single up the middle to score Logan.

UC Davis' lead was short-lived, however, as the Hornets posted three runs on three hits of their own in the bottom of the third.

The score remained tied until the sixth inning, when Sacramento State catcher Dane Fujinaka drew a bases-loaded walk. The Aggies turned a double play to get out of the jam and tied it up once again an inning later.

Brann singled to lead off the seventh inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nick Lynch, who pinch hit for Logan, hit a deep fly ball to right which was caught, but as Brann tagged up to third the Hornets' right fielder bounced the throw and Brann was able to score as the ball rolled into foul territory.

Sacramento State broke the second tie of the game with two runs on three hits in the eighth inning, including Fujinaka's RBI bunt single and David Del Grande's RBI fielder's choice grounder, which was nearly a double play to end the inning.

Brann went 3-for-4 to pace the Aggies at the dish while starting pitcher Ben Burke and relievers Robert Parucha and Craig Lanza each tallied scoreless appearances.

Right fielder Nathan Lukes went 3-for-4 with two runs to lead the Hornets. Designated hitter Chris Lewis had a triple and matched Fujinaka with a game-best two RBIs.

UC Davis will have two days off before playing host to No. 4 ranked Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference series at Dobbins Stadium. First pitch on Friday is 2:30 p.m. followed by 1 p.m. start time on Saturday and Sunday.
