SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Ross Warner's RBI single in the top of the 10th inning drove home Ryan Coultas with the go-ahead and Aggie reliever Dave McKae stranded the tying run on third base with two outs as UC Davis defeated Cal State, San Bernardino, 3-2, in 10 innings in a California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball game Friday evening at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
With the win the Aggies improve to 19-12 on the season, 13-8 in CCAA play while San Bernardino falls to 16-14 overall, 8-12 in conference action.
With the score tied 2-2 at the end of nine innings, Coultas led the Aggie 10th with his second double of the game. Two outs later and with Coultas on third, Warner's single drove in what proved to be the game-winning run. In the bottom half of the inning, Travis Bearden, who entered in the 10th after nine strong innings from Aggie starter Julio Marquez, retired two of the four batters he faced before giving way to McKae with runners on the corners and two outs. McKae retired Chris McAllen on a groundout to second base to record his first save of the season.
UC Davis jumped on the board in the first inning as Coultas drilled a one-out double and scored two batters later on a David Butterworth RBI single. The Coyotes tied the score in their half of the inning an a McAllen RBI single that scored Josh Thomas.
Trailing 2-1 entering the sixth inning, the Aggies evened the score as Andrew Reisinger led off the frame with a double and scored two outs later on a Mark Wells double, one of four Aggie doubles on the evening.
Marquez went 9.0 innings, scattering six hits and two runs while striking out eight and walking just one as he improved his record to 5-1 on the season. Coultas led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Warner also collected three hits on the night.
San Bernardino was led by Jake Puckett's two hits in the game, the only Coyote to collect more than one hit. Charles Rohr started and went 9.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and two runs while striking out six. Danny Lambaren came on in the 10th to take the loss, moving his record to 1-2 on the season.
These same two teams will face off in a doubleheader on Saturday in San Bernardino. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
