Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore Daniel Cepin hit a three-run homer, senior Ryan Scoma drove home two runs and freshman Scott Lyman pitched two shutout innings to help lead UC Davis to a 6-5 victory over No. 21 San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The win helps the Aggies avoid the four-game series sweep and improves their record to 5-21 overall. For the Aztecs, the loss ends their three-game winning streak as they fall to 21-11.

Cepin hammered a three-run shot in the sixth inning to eventually lift UC Davis to the victory. He also led the team with two runs scored. Scoma finished with two RBIs off sacrifice flies and sophomore Rikki Foster rounded out the Aggies with RBIs. In addition, junior Ty Kelly went team-best 3-for-4 from the plate with a run scored and his team-leading 10th double of the season.

Lyman came on in the seventh inning with runners on second and third and only one out. He gave up a sacrifice fly to the first batter he faced and pitched around a walk to end the Aztec rally on a fly out. Lyman returned to pitch shutout baseball through the final two innings and picked up the first save of the season for the Aggies. Senior Jeremy McChesney went five innings and allowed three hits on six hits to earn his first win of the year.

The Aztecs were led by Erik Castro, who went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Cory Vaughn added two RBIs to account for the team's run production. Starter Nate Solow gave up six runs on seven hits in the loss.

UC Davis earned its' first lead of the series with a run in the first inning. Cepin was hit by a pitch and Kelly walked. Foster sent a two-out single to center field to score Cepin.

 

 

The Aztecs answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own. Castro singled in the run following a double play that advanced a runner to third base.

The Aggies reclaimed the lead in the third with another run. Bauer singled with one out and Kelly advanced him to third on a double to set up a sacrifice fly to left field from Scoma.

Castro opened the fourth inning with a solo home run, his third of the series, to tie the game for the second time.

UC Davis answered with another single run in the fifth and added three more in the sixth to jump ahead 6-2. Scoma delivered his second sac fly to score Kelly in the fifth inning. Kelly singled and advanced all the way to third on a two-base error on the left fielder.

Cepin sparked the big sixth inning with a three-run homer to left center field. Grant Hirneise walked to open the inning and Scott Kalush singled to set up the two-out shot by Cepin. Kalush finished with two hits in the game.

San Diego State rallied with a run in the bottom half of the sixth and two runs in the seventh to pull within one run. Vaughn drove home a run in both innings, while Castro accounted for the other RBI. Lyman got the final two outs of the seventh and pitched scoreless baseball to finish the game.

UC Davis returns to action next week a three-game Big West Conference series against UC Santa Barbara at Dobbins Stadium. Thursday's opening game begins at 2:30 p.m. and will be simulcast through KDVS 90.3 FM and ucdavisaggies.com.
