DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis starting pitcher Harry Stanwyck allowed just one earned run on four hits in six innings but the Aggies were shutout, 3-0, by No. 4 ranked Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference game on Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The Aggies (10-17, 0-4 Big West) scored no runs on four hits with three errors while the Titans (26-4, 4-0) tallied three runs on seven hits with one error.

It was a pitcher's duel as both starters shined, but Cal State Fullerton's Thomas Eshelman got the best of the Aggies in the end.

The freshman (7-1), who has not walked a batter in 58 innings this season, allowed just four hits in eight innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win while center fielder/closer Michael Lorenzen posted his 10th save of the season on just five pitches in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Eshelman and Lorenzen combined to retire 18 straight to end the game. After UC Davis second baseman Steven Patterson singled to lead off the fourth, the Aggies did not put another man on base.

Stanwyck (3-4) picked up the loss despite a strong outing. The junior gave up just two runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks in six innings with five strikeouts. Reliever Robert Parucha allowed one run on three hits in three innings.

The No. 4 ranked Titans jumped out to an early lead in the first after designated hitter J.D. Davis scored from second on a throwing error which would have ended the inning. Cal State Fullerton scored again in the third, without getting a hit. In Stanwyck's only sloppy inning of the game, the Titans loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch before third baseman Matt Chapman drew a four-pitch walk to drive in a run.

Cal State Fullerton tacked on another run in the eighth, but it wasn't needed as Eshelman was in command. The Titans' freshman starting pitcher entered the game with the lowest ERA in the Big West among starting pitchers and the best opponent batting average in the league regardless.

UC Davis will get another crack against a Titan freshman starting pitcher in game two of the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Cal State Fullerton will throw RHP Justin Garza while the Aggie will counter with RHP Spencer Koopmans.
