SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Michael Potter threw a four-hit shutout while Matt Kamigawachi had four of the Aggies' 13 hits in the 5-0 victory as UC Davis captured game one of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader over Cal State, San Bernardino Saturday afternoon at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. In the nightcap, the Coyotes posted a 12-8, come-from-behind victory to earn the split.
Following Saturday's play the Aggies move to 20-13 on the season, 14-9 in CCAA play while the Coyotes go to 17-15, 9-13 in conference action.
In the opener, the Aggies scored four runs in the first two innings off Coyotes starter Greg Mathenia and that was all Potter needed as he spaced out four hits, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter to improve his record to 5-2. Potter didn't allow one Coyote runner to reach third base in the game that took just two hours and four minutes to play.
With two outs and nobody on in the first, Matt Kamigawachi doubles and scored on an Andrew Reisinger RBI single. The next batter, Ross Warner,, singled home David Butterworth, who reached after being hit by a pitch, to give UC Davis a 2-0 lead. The Aggies added two more in the second on RBI singles from Mark Wells and Kamigawachi.
UC Davis closed out the scoring in the fifth as with two outs, Reisinger doubled home Butterworth from first. In all the Aggies pounded out 13 hits off Mathenia who went the distance, allowing only six hits and one run after the second inning. Matt Kamigawachi had four hits in five at bats and drove in a run for UC Davis while Reisinger, Kyle Irving and Ryan Coultas each had a pair of hits.
In Saturday's second game, designated hitter Brian Schweiger put the Coyotes ahead in the first inning with a three-run homer -- his third of the season -- off Aggies starter, Vince DeCoito. However, the Aggies came right back to six runs in the top of the second inning off Coyotes starter Tawd Frensley. The big blow was a three-run homer by first baseman David Butterworth, his fifth of the season.
Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth, the Coyotes -- sparked by a leadoff home run by freshman centerfielder Erik Simmons -- scored five times off reliever Jack Boyl. Mark Ayala Jr. drove in two runs and two more runs came across on Aggies errors for a 9-6 CSUSB lead.
Chris DiBlasi tripled in a run and Schweiger singled to drive in DiBlasi for an 11-6 lead in the fifth. The 12th and final run came across on Josh Thomas's double driving in Chris McAllen who had singled. The Aggies added two runs in the top of the seventh on a Dustin Soderman RBI single and an Irving groundout that scored Matt Blankenheim. In the nightcap, Robby Tulk was three-for-four for UC Davis and Dustin Soderman had two hits in four at bats with an RBI. Thomas was four-for-five to lead a 16-hit Coyotes attack. Schweiger was three-for-four with four RBI.
DeCoito started and lasted 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out one. Boyl came on in the second and went 2.2 innings, surrendering five runs on five hits in taking his first loss of the season.
These same two teams will conclude their series with a single game on Sunday in San Bernardino. Gametime is set for noon.
