SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Casey Mutter tossed a four-hitter and Cal State San Bernardino hitters backed him up with an 11-hit attack off three UC Davis pitchers en route to a 6-1 Coyotes victory in a California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball game Sunday before 170 fans at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 20-14 on the season, 14-10 in CCAA play. CSUSB improves to 18-15 overall, 10-13 in conference action.
Mutter pitched hitless ball through four innings as the Coyotes staked him to a 3-0 lead. The Aggies got their first hit in the fifth on a two-out double by Dustin Soderman that drove in David Butterworth who had been hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a balk.
Mutter gave up just three hits after that to finish his second complete game of the season in nine starts. He walked just one batter and struck out eight.
CSUSB took a 1-0 lead in the first on back-to-back singles by Josh Thomas and Chris McAllen with Thomas scoring on a Chris DiBlasi fielder's choice. McAllen was cut down at second and Thomas broke from third to the plate and the throw from Mark Wells at second to catcher Andrew Reisinger was off the mark.
In the third inning, the Coyotes got two runs off Aggies starter Trevor Thornton as DiBlasi and catcher Brian Schweiger hit back-to-back singles and designated hitter Ryan Simpson dumped a two-out double into shallow center field that Robby Tulk just missed on a diving attempt.
The Coyotes padded their lead to 5-1 in the sixth on a two-base throwing error by Aggies shortstop Ryan Coultas that scored Greg Collette and put Eric Simmons on third base. He later scored on a wild pitch by Aggies reliever Joel Needham. Mark Ayala Jr. doubled in Schweiger in the bottom of the seventh for the game's final run.
Thornton went 4.1 innings for the Aggies, scattering eight hits while allowing three runs in suffering just his second loss of the season against five wins. Joel Needham and Dave McKae went a combined 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and three runs, although only one was earned. Tulk, Soderman, Ross Warner and Andrew Reisinger each had hits for the Aggies on the afternoon. McAllen, DiBlasi, Schweiger, Simpson and Thomas led the 11-hit attack with two hits each while Ayala, Jr. added a double.
UC Davis will next be in action on Friday when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills in a CCAA contest. Gametime is set for 2:30pm.
