STANFORD, Calif. -- Host Stanford scored three times with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to rally back from a 6-4 deficit and hand UC Davis a heart-breaking 7-6 defeat in front of 1,141 fans at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.

The loss dropped the Aggies to 14-15 overall on the season, losing their third straight contest heading into this weekend's Big West Conference series against Long Beach State at Dobbins Stadium. UC Davis left 11 runners on for the game, including eight in scoring position, and left the bases loaded twice.

The Cardinal avenged last year's 2-1 walk-off win by the Aggies with their win on Tuesday night, improving them to 11-14 overall on the season. Stanford has won four straight against UC Davis at Sunken Diamond dating back to an 11-2 win by the Aggies in 2009.

Steven Patterson and Spencer Brann each finished with a pair of hits for UC Davis, which ralled back from a three-run deficit of its own, scoring five unanswered runs in the middle innings to take the lead. After a John Williams' RBI fielder's choice broke up the shutout, the Aggies plated two in the fourth on Nick Lynch's RBI double down the right field line -- the first hit of the game for the visitors -- and tied the game in the fifth when they loaded the bases with two outs thanks to a pair of walks and a hit batter.

That brought Adam Young to the plate, working the count full before drawing his second of three walks on the night to force home Seth Batty and make it 4-4.

UC Davis kept the pressure on in the sixth, loading the bases with one out on a double by Brann that missed leaving the yard by a couple of feet, a hit batter, and a walk. Batty strode to the plate and hit a slow roller to short for the second out of the inning, but it was enough to score Brann and give the Aggies their first lead of the night.

An inning later, UC Davis added some breathing room thanks to some help from the Stanford defense, as two more walks and a single by Brann loaded the bases for Evan Heptig, whose potential inning-ending ground ball to second base was booted, allowing Lynch to score, giving the Aggies the 6-4 lead.

That score would stand until the decisive eighth as UC Davis reliever Raul Jacobson got the first two outs of the inning, but ran into trouble with a single by Zach Hoffpauir and a walk to Wayne Taylor. The Aggies went to their bullpen, bringing in closer Zach Stone for a save attempt, but he was rudely greeted by Dominic Jose's ringing double off the wall in right on the first pitch, scoring two runs and tying the game.

Pinch-hitter Brant Whiting then completed the comeback for Stanford, rolling an 0-2 offering through the hole on the right side, scoring Jose for the winning run. Jose finished the night 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Cardinal.

Sam Lindquist (1-0), the sixth pitcher of the night for the Cardinal, retired the Aggies in order in the ninth to seal the win, throwing the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit, walking one, and striking out one.

Stone (2-2) suffered the loss for the Aggies, allowing one run on two hits in just one-third of an inning. Making his first career start, true freshman Justin Mullins allowed four runs on four hits over the first three innings, and was followed by Orlando Razo, who held the Stanford bats in check, surrendering just one hit over 3.1 innings of work and was in line for the win until the Cardinal rally.

UC Davis opens this weekend's conference series against Long Beach State on Friday afternoon (April 11) at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium, witha Saturday's and Sunday's games scheduled for 1 p.m. starts.
