DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis bats exploded for a season-high 18 hits and the host Aggies answered every Long Beach State rally with one of their own, coming from behind to hand the 49ers a 7-5 defeat on Friday afternoon in a Big West Conference series opener at Dobbins Stadium.

The win evened UC Davis' record at 15-15 overall and improved the Aggies to 2-5 in conference play, extending their Dobbins Stadium winning streak to six games with the victory. Long Beach State fell to 15-17 overall and 2-2 in the Big West with the loss, watching as its four-game winning streak over UC Davis came to an end.

Eight of the nine Aggie starters finished with hits -- five of those with multiple hits -- including three hits apiece from Steven Patterson, Nick Lynch, and Spencer Brann. It marked the 13th time this season that UC Davis has finished with double-digit hits and was the highest hit total for the Aggies since they banged out 22 hits in a 16-12 win at Saint Mary's on May 14, 2013.

Junior right-hander Raul Jacobson (3-0) earned the win with 2.1 innings of hitless relief, walking one and striking out one, before giving way to freshman closer Zach Stone in the ninth, who nailed down his eighth save of the year with some help from his defense, which ended the game on a nifty 5-4-3 double play.

Reliever Nick Rosetta (1-1) was tagged with the loss, charged with three runs on four hits in the decisive sixth inning. Trailing by a run entering the frame, Austin March led-off with a single and moved to third on Steven Patterson's double down the left field line that deflected into the corner off Johnny Bekakis' glove after a long run.

After a soft liner for the first out, Nick Lynch followed with a single deep in the hole at shortstop to score the tying run in March and move Patterson -- the go-ahead run -- to third when the throw to first got away from the defense. Cameron Pongs came on in relief and got a strikeout to inch the 49ers closer to ending the inning, but a wild pitch with Brann at the plate scooted to the backstop, allowing Patterson to score and make it 6-5.

A passed ball moved Lynch to third before Brann lined a 3-1 pitch into the gap in right centerfield for a double, allowing Lynch to easily score for the final 7-5 advantage.

Long Beach State broke the seal after a 1-2-3 first inning with two runs in the second off starter Harry Stanwyck as Richard Prigatano and Michael Hill rapped back-to-back singles to lead-off the inning and followed with a double steal to both move into scoring position. Alex Bishop drove home the first run of the game with a ground out and a wild pitch plated the second run for a 2-0 lead.

The Aggies answered the bell in the third to take their first lead as Patterson laced a two-run double to left and a single back through the box by Lynch made it 3-2.

Prigatano's third single of the day in the fifth tied the game at three before UC Davis rallied for the lead in its half of the inning. Brann's rocket off the third baseman allowed Lynch -- who doubled -- to score and make it 4-3, but any further rally was extinguished after the Aggies had a runner thrown out at the plate and, following a walk, a fly ball ended the inning.

The back-and-forth affair took another turn in the 49ers' favor in the sixth as the visitors rebounded with a pair of runs to regain the lead. With runners on the corners, Colby Brenner singled up the middle to tie the game and Garrett Hampson lofted a fly ball to center to score Colton Vaughn and a 5-4 lead, setting up the Aggies' winning rally.

Prigatano finished with three of Long Beach State's eight hits with five other batters collecting singles on the day.

First pitch for game two of the series begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday (April 12) at Dobbins Stadium.
