DAVIS, Calif. -- Cal Poly right-hander Erich Uelmen allowed just one run while striking out five over six innings of work and the visiting Mustangs scored three times in the fifth inning to break open a one-run game en route to a 4-1 win over UC Davis in the opener of a three-game Big West Conference series on Thursday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The loss was the fifth straight for the Aggies, who fell to 9-18 overall and 2-5 in conference play, leaving nine runners on base for the game -- seven of those in scoring position. Cal Poly took home its fourth straight victory, improving to 14-18 overall and 5-2 in the Big West.

An RBI single by Josh George in the fourth broke up the shutout for UC Davis starter Robert Garcia (1-3), who had stranded three on base -- two in scoring position -- in the first three innings, scoring Michael Sanderson for the 1-0 lead. George was then eventually thrown out at the plate by Alex Aguiar to end the inning, trying to score from second on a single by Kevin Morgan in the very next at-bat to keep it a one-run game.

The Mustangs then poured it on in the decisive fifth inning, plating three runs on only one hit, but getting help from four walks to take a 4-0 lead. Two walks to start the frame brought up Bradlee Beesley, whose ground ball to the left side started a 5-4 double play as the Aggies looked to get out of the jam unscathed.

However, a walk and a wild pitch put two in scoring position for Sanderson, who slapped a single through the right side to make it 2-0 and put runners at the corners. Sanderson then stole second and came around to score behind teammate Kyle Marinconz when a wild pitch on a dropped third strike sailed to the backstop and got lost by the Aggie catcher, the delay allowing just enough time for both runs to scamper home.

UC Davis, which put the lead-off batter on base in six of the nine innings on Thursday, finally broke through in its half of the sixth when Ryan Anderson led-off with a sailing double to left, moved to third on a ground ball to the right side, and scored when Ignacio Diaz reached on an infield single to make it, 4-1.

A strike out and a ground ball ended the threat for Uelmen (2-5), who gave way to closer Michael Clark in the seventh. Clark worked around a pair of errors and a walk over his three hitless innings of work to nail down his fourth save of the year, striking out a pair in the process.

Garcia allowed all four runs on six hits while striking out four over 4.2 innings of work before giving way to Blake Peters, who closed out the fifth inning. Peters scattered six hits and struck out two over 3.1 hitless innings to keep his team close, while Blake Hannah finished the night, walking one in a scoreless ninth.

Jacob Thomas, Mark Cardinalli, and Ryan Hooper, also finished with singles for the Aggies, while Alex McKenna and Sanderson each had three hits to pace Cal Poly at the plate.

The two teams reconvene on Friday night (April 14) at 6 p.m., taking the field at Raley Field in West Sacramento, Calif., for game two of the series at the home of the Sacramento River Cats -- the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Tickets are available at the gate for $12, with a $5 ticket available for students. Parking at the stadium is $5.
