RENO, Nev. - Jacob Butler connected for a three-run home run in the third inning as the University of Nevada jumped out to a 8-0 lead on the way to a 12-6 non-conference victory over UC Davis at Peccole Park on Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory Nevada won its 20th game of the season to improve to 20-16 on the season while the Aggies fell to 22-16 on the year.
After stranding three runners in the first two innings the Pack exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the third to go in front 6-0. Second baseman Taylor Pullins started the inning with a single and scored on catcher Brett Hayes' RBI triple. First baseman Erick Streelman drove home the second run of the inning with an RBI single. Tony Cappuccilli then reached base before Butler delivered the big blow of the inning, a three-run homer to give Nevada a 5-0 lead. Shortstop Robert Marcial's RBI double in the inning scored right fielder Mike Hass and the Pack led 6-0 after three innings of play.
In the fourth inning Nevada added a single run when Hayes doubled and scored on Butler ground out to push the lead to 7-0. In the fifth inning Marcial hit the first home run of his career to make the score 8-0.
UCD scored its first run of the game in the sixth inning when catcher Josh Behrens single home designated hitter Ross Warner, who reached after being hit by pitch. In the seventh first baseman David Butterworth's two-run homer scored Matt Kamigawachi to close the gap to 8-3.
The Pack but together another big inning in the bottom of the eighth scoring four runs on just two hits. Cappuccilli homered with one out for the first run of the inning. Walks to Butler, left fielder Chris Gimenez and center fielder Brian Gazerro loaded the bases for right fielder Chris Dickerson. Chris Dickerson doubled in two runs and Marcial's sacrifice fly plated the Pack's 12th and final run of the game.
The Aggies scored three runs in the top of the third, two were unearned as a result of a passed ball and throwing error to make the final scored 12-6.
In a predetermined three inning outing Pack starter Eddie Bonine got the win to even his season record at 4-4. In his three innings on Tuesday he pitched three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. In all the Pack used seven pitchers in the game.
UCD starter Jeff Vignau lost for the first time this year allowing six runs, four earned in three innings of action.
Hayes and Marcial led Nevada with two hits each. Butler and Marcial hit home runs and had four and three RBI respectively. Shortstop Ryan Coultas, Behrens, and center fielder Yaw Yiadom had two his apiece for the Aggies. Behrens and Butterworth had two RBI each.
UC Davis will next be in action on Friday when it begins a four-game series in San Diego against UC San Diego.
