DAVIS, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Rikki Foster hit a walk-off single to cap a three-run ninth inning and helped UC Davis defeat Sacramento State, 8-7, in a Causeway Cup baseball game at Dobbins Stadium Tuesday afternoon. The win gives the Aggies a three-game sweep over the Hornets in the annual Causeway series.
UC Davis has won its last three games and improves to 24-11 overall, which ties last season's win total. Sac State drops its second straight to fall to 15-18. The Aggies have now won six consecutive games over the Hornets dating back to last season.
The Aggies scored three runs in the ninth inning to erase a two-run deficit and finish with only their second lead of the game. Ty Kelly and Jake Jefferies opened the inning with back-to-back singles and Ryan Scoma walked to load the bases. Kyle Mihaylo walked to bring home the first run and pinch hitter Evan Hudson singled to tie the score. Foster hit a single down the right field line to drive home the winning run in pinch runner Daniel Cepin.
"We just never gave up and we finally got some quality at bats in the ninth inning," said Aggie coach Rex Peters.
Jeremy McChesney recorded the final out in the ninth inning to earn his second victory of the season. Tommy Elrod gave up the final two Aggie runs to get his second loss.
Scoma was the offensive leader for UC Davis as he finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a team-high three RBI's, a double and two walks. Kelly recorded his third multiple hit game with three hits to go with an RBI and a game-high three runs scored. Ryan Royster, who wore No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson Day, scored two runs.
The Aggies' only other lead came in the first inning off an RBI single from Scoma. The Hornets tied the game with a run in the second and scored three more in the third to take their biggest lead of the game. David Flores hit a two-run homer in the big third inning.
UC Davis scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to cut the lead to one, 4-3. Scoma had the RBI in the third and Kelly scored in the fifth off a throwing error on the Hornet pitcher.
The two teams traded single runs in the seventh inning before Sac State took another two-run lead with two runs in the eighth. Flores hit another two-run shot to right field to give the Hornets a 7-5 lead heading into the ninth. Scoma tallied his third RBI of the game in the seventh.
The Aggies play their third conference series of the year starting Friday as they welcome Cal Poly to Dobbins Stadium. Fist pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
