SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Brandon Robert's two-run single highlighted a five-run second inning and Garrett Olson worked eight solid innings to earn his eighth win of the season as Cal Poly defeated UC Davis 7-4 Friday evening in the first of a three-game series at Baggett Stadium.
With the loss the Aggies see their three-game winning streak snapped and fall to 19-13. The Mustangs improve to 23-13.
UC Davis started strong as it put up three runs in the top of the first. Lukas Kirby lined a two-run double then came around to score on Jimmy Goetz's single to left. The inning ended when Goetz was thrown out at the plate when trying to score from second on Kyle Irving's single to right.
The Mustangs answered with a run in their half of the inning then put up five more in the second. Matt Cooper drove home the second run of the game on an RBI infield hit, followed by a two-run single by Roberts, an RBI single by Josh Lansford and a run-scoring double by Kyle Blumenthal. When the inning was over the Mustangs had scored five runs on seven hits, and held a 6-3 lead they never surrendered.
Cal Poly extended the lead to 7-3 in the sixth when they scored an unanswered run while the Aggie's finally tally came in the ninth as Ryan Royster lined a pinch-hit, leadoff triple to right, then came home to score on a wild pitch.. Following a one-out walk to Daniel Descalso, Mike bille came on to strike out the next to hitters as he earned his 11th save of the season.
Dave McKae started for UC Davis and went 6.0 innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits, striking out five with a walk. McKae entered the game having not allowed a run over his last 21 innings of work. Jeremy McChesney came on in the seventh to work two scoreless innings.
Offensively, the Aggies connected for seven hits on the evening, with Kyle Irving the only player with more than one as Irving went 2-3.
Olson improved to 8-2 on the season and he worked 8.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Bud Nooris worked a third of any inning in the ninth, allowing the Royster triple, before Bille closed things out.
These same two teams will meet Saturday evening at Baggett Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
