SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Right-hander Jimmy Shull pitched a five-hit shutout and designated hitter JJ Owen belted a two-run home run in the second inning to spark Cal Poly to a 2-0 victory over UC Davis in the second of a three-game, non-conference baseball series Saturday night before 1,220 in Baggett Stadium.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 19-14 on the season and drop their first series of the season in five attempts. Cal Poly improves to 24-13 overall.
All the Mustang offense came in the second inning as Kyle Blumental led off the frame with a walk then came around to score on Owen's fifth home run of the season. From there it was all Shull as he earned his first complete came of the season by striking out nine and walking three. Only two Aggie runners reached third base and Shull retired nine straight Aggies until giving up a two-out single to catcher Tyler LaTorre in the ninth inning.
Aggie starter Michael Potter was also impressive, going the distance with six strikeouts while scattering just five hits on the evening. With the loss Potter sees his record fall to 3-4 this season.
Second baseman Daniel Descalso had two of UC Davis' five hits. Shortstop Brandon Oliver added a double to open the game and moved to third on a groundout, but Shull notched a strikeout and a pop-up to end the threat.
The final game of the season will be Sunday at 1 p.m. in Baggett Stadium.
