Aggies Pound Out 22 Hits, Need Extra Innings For 13-10 Win At Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Kyle Irving's two-out double down the right-field line in the 13th inning snapped a 10-10 tie and UC Davis went on to beat Cal Poly 13-10 in the finale of a three-game, non-conference baseball series Sunday afternoon before 1,328 in Baggett Stadium.

With the win the Aggies salvage one victory in the series and improve to 20-14 on the season. Cal Poly falls to 24-14.

With Lukas Kirby on second and Tyler LaTorre on first, Irving laced his second double of the game down the right-field line to push the Aggies ahead for good. Michael Jacobellis followed with a single to right scoring both LaTorre and Irving for the final margin of victory.

Kirby sent the game into extra innings with a run-scoring double in the ninth inning, tying the game at 8-8. Cal Poly had a runner at third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Josh Lansford grounded out to Aggie shortstop Brandon Oliver to end the threat.

Both teams scored twice in the 10th inning, the Aggies on an RBI single up the middle from Dan Baldini, who later came around to score on a wild pitch. The Mustangs tied the game on Jimmy Van Ostrand's two-run home run.

Cal Poly missed a chance to end the game in the 12th, putting runners at first and second with one out. Jon Marshall flied out to center field and Drew Gillmore fouled out to end the inning.

UC Davis pounded out 22 hits, including four by catcher Tyler LaTorre and three each by shortstop Brandon Oliver, Kirby and Jacobellis. Baldini, Irving and Jacobellis each added three RBIs on the afternoon.

 

 

The Aggies held a 5-2 lead early in the contest, but the Mustangs fought back to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Among Cal Poly's 14 hits were three home runs. Matt Cooper hit a two-run shot in the third inning, cutting the Aggies' lead to 3-2, and Kyle Blumenthal added a two-run blast in Cal Poly's six-run fifth-inning rally as the Mustangs took an 8-5 lead. Also in the fifth, Brandon Roberts tripled to drive in a pair of runs while Cooper and Lansford added RBI singles as the Mustangs hit for the cycle in the inning.

Justin Fitzgerald pitched 3 2/3 innings for the win, allowing no runs and three hits with three strikeouts. He was the last of four Aggie pitchers used in the game. Starter Eddie Gamboa went 4.0 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Cal Poly countered with seven pitchers -- Rocky Roquet (1-2) suffering the loss as he gave up all three runs on three hits in the 13th. Starter Gary Daley allowed five runs and nine hits in five innings.

UC Davis is back in action on tuesday when it heads to Reno to face the University of Nevada. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
