SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Ryan Thornton connected for a first-inning home run and Trevor Thronton fired his second consecutive complete game as UC Davis opened the four-game series against UC San Diego with a 10-2 victory over the Tritons Friday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field.

Thornton, the CCAA Pitcher of the Week honoree in two of the last three weeks, tossed a five-hit complete game, striking out six Triton batters while not allowing a walk in improving to 7-2 on the season. Thornton was coming off a one-hit seven-inning shutout of Cal State Dominguez Hills last Saturday.

Offensively, UC Davis got a solo home run by Coultas, his third of the year, to get things rolling in the first inning off of freshman UCSD starter Jos? Navarro. The Aggies then added a single run in the second and two runs each in the fourth and sixth before breaking it wide open with a four-run eighth. Senior Dustin Soderman was a perfect three-for-three at the plate with a double, triple, and four runs scored. Coultas, junior third baseman Matt Kamigawachi, senior second baseman Mark Wells and junior leftfielder Matt Blankenheim each provided a pair of hits. Coultas finished with a double, a home run, two runs, two RBI and two walks on the afternoon. Blankenheim and Kamigawachi drove in three and two runs, respectively, while Wells scored twice.

For UCSD, Navarro fell to 3-6 on the year, lasting four-plus innings before being replaced. After Thornton had retired the first nine Tritons in order, junior rightfielder Brett Burton led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to right field, his fourth on the year. UCSD then got a double by senior second baseman Nigel Miller and a single by freshman leftfielder Damian Fante to open the sixth inning, with senior third baseman Matt Merrifield plating Miller on a sacrifice fly. The Tritons were able to get just two more hits off of Thornton on the day, both of them infield singles coming with two outs in the ninth.
