SAN DIEGO, Calif. - First baseman David Butterworth had five hits on the day and the Aggies pitching staff had two solid efforts from Michael Potter and Dave McKae as UC Dais swept a pair of games from host UC San Diego, 9-4 and 3-1, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Triton Field. The wins gave visiting UC Davis a 3-0 lead in the four-game weekend series between the teams, after a 10-2 win in Friday's opener.
In game one on Saturday, the Aggies jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a single run in the first and three more in the third inning. Butterworth doubled home third baseman Matt Kamigawachi to get UC Davis on the board, and added a two-run double after a run-scoring single by Kamigawachi in the third.
UCSD got two runs back in the bottom of the frame, as rightfielder David Hawk led the inning off with his third home run of the year, and second baseman Nigel Miller drove home leftfielder Damian Fante with a single.
UC Davis struck for four more scores in the top of the fourth, however, and never looked back.
The Aggies hit five doubles as a team, all in the first four innings. The second through fourth batters in their lineup combined to go nine-for-13 with seven runs batted in and five runs scored. Butterworth did the most damage, finishing four-for-five with the two doubles, and four RBIs. Freshman Michael Potter went 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, to improve to 6-3.
Miller was three-for-four with two runs and an RBI for UCSD, while Fante was two-for-five. First baseman Keith Albrecht drove in a pair of runs. Junior ace Rafael Bergstrom (5-2) took the loss.
In the nightcap, UCSD took its first lead of the weekend with a run in the first with shortstop Keith Hernandez grounding out to plate Fante, who had led off with a base hit and moved to third on an error. The unearned run was all that UCSD would get off of sophomore Aggie starter Dave McKae and junior closer Joel Needham, as UC Davis pushed across single runs in the second, fourth and fifth frames of the seven-inning contest to earn the sweep. McKae went 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out seven. Needham finished up with 1.2 innings of work to notch his fifth save of the campaign. Butterworth had another double and scored twice. Senior rightfielder Dustin Soderman was one-for-two with two runs batted in.
Freshman Byron Grubman tossed a complete game for the home side, but was pinned with his first loss of the year, dropping to 7-1. Senior third baseman Matt Merrifield provided a pair of hits.
Saturday's sweep moved the Aggies' record to 25-16 overall, 19-11 in the CCAA. The reeling Tritons, who have now lost 10 of their last 12 games, fall to 24-22 overall, 18-15 in league play.
These teams conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch at UCSD's Triton Baseball Field is set for noon.
