RENO, Nev. - Freshman Grant Hirneise had three hits and drove in three runs while the Aggie pitching staff shut down the Wolf Pack bats for much of the game as UC Davis defeated Nevada 5-4 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Peccole Park.
With the win the Aggies improve to 21-14 overall and sweep the two-game season series from the Wolf Pack. Nevada falls to 19-15.
The Wolf Pack jumped out first as Shawn Scobee led off the second with a triple to deep center, then came home when the next batter, Matt Bowman, connected for his third home run of the season over the wall in left. After the home run, Aggie starter Paul Gonzales settled down and silenced the Nevada bats. After a two-out single in the second, Gonzales retired nine straight batters before being removed after walking the first two hitters in the sixth.
While Gonzales was shutting down Nevada, his teammates gave him the lead. Brandon Oliver's RBI single in the third put UC Davis on the board then Hirneise gave the Aggies the lead for good with a two-run single to left-center. Oliver drove in another run in the seventh to make it a two-run lead then Hirneise struck again in the eighth, lining a sharp single through the right side of the infield, scoring Tyler LaTorre and giving the Aggies a 5-2 advantage.
The Wolf Pack put the first two runners on in the sixth, chasing Gonzales as Nik Aurora came on. The sophomore righthander struck out the next two hitters then induced Scobee into an inning-ending fly out, ending the Nevada threat. Aurora struck out Bowman to start the ninth, but a one-out single to Eric Newman ended his afternoon as freshman Jeremy McChesney came on.
McChesney gave up a walk, hit a batter, then surrendered a bases-loaded, two-run single to pinch-hitter Terry Walsh, cutting the lead to 5-4. But with the heart of the Nevada lineup at the plate, McChesney delivered his first save of the season by striking out Jacob Butler and Ben Mummy to end the game.
Gonzales picked up his first win of the season, striking out five in five innings of work. Nevada starter Jarad Mitchell went just 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits as he suffered the loss.
Offensively, Hirneise had his first three-hit day as an Aggie, driving in a season-best three runs. Jimmy Goetz and Kyle Irving also added two hits each while Oliver finished his day with two RBIs Six different Wolf Pack players finished the day with one hit each.
The Aggies are next in action on Friday when they begin a three-game series against defending national champion Cal State Fullerton. Friday's game will be played at Raley Field with gametime set for 7 p.m.
