DAVIS, Calif. - UC Irvine's Daniel Bibona struck out eight UC Davis batters and allowed only one earned run on three hits to lead the Anteaters to an 8-1 victory over the Aggies Friday at Dobbins Stadium.
With the win, UC Irvine improves to 22-13 on the year and 6-4 in Big West Conference play while UC Davis drops to 16-17 overall and 2-5 in league action.
Bibona earned the win to move to 7-2 while Sean Watson dropped to 1-2 after giving up seven runs, only three of which were earned, on 11 hits in 7.2 innings of work.
UC Irvine was led by Casey Stevenson who went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs while Sean Madigan was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Senior infielder Jeff Cusick saw his 25-game hit streak end as he was 0-for-5 on the day.
The Anteaters struck first when Stevenson hit the first pitch he saw for a triple to right centerfield, then scored off an RBI ground out from Brian Hernandez. UC Irvine tacked on two additional runs in the third inning after D.J. Crumlich reached base after being hit by a pitch, then scored off an RBI single up the middle from Stevenson. Hernandez posted his second RBI of the day with a single up the middle of his own which allowed Sean Madigan to score from second base.
Bibona held UC Davis to only two runs through the first six innings before Heylman tripled down the right field line, then scored on a groundout by David Popkins to cut the 'Eater lead to two runs.
UC Irvine, however, would capitalize off a fielding error by Watson and score five unearned runs in the eighth inning. Ronnie Schaeffer reached first base to open the inning after Watson mishandled Schaeffer's hit, allowing the designated hitter to get on base safely. The Anteaters loaded the bases and, with two outs, a single from Madigan allowed two runners to score.
David Popkins replaced Watson, but gave up a double to Stevenson, the first batter he faced, which allowed another two runs across home plate. Stevenson would come around to score the final run of the inning before Popkins forced Cusick to fly out to centerfield.
UC Davis and UC Irvine resume action Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium. Sophomore lefty Dayne Quist will start for the Aggies while senior right hander Christian Bergman will start for the Anteaters.
