IRVINE, Calif. - Kevin Grove hit 2-for-3 with a triple while Anthony Kupbens struck out four batters in seven complete innings, but the UC Davis baseball team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 18 UC Irvine on Saturday in the Big West Conference series finale at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine.

UC Davis is now 9-24 overall and 3-6 in conference action while UC Irvine moves to 26-10 on the year and 8-4 in the Big West.

UC Irvine took a quick 2-0 lead in the second inning on a squeeze bunt by Tommy Reyes with both Ronnie Shaeffer and Scott Gottschling both scoring on the play.

The Aggies were held hitless until Brett Morgan's leadoff double in the fourth inning and UC Davis scored in the top of the fifth to cut into the Anteater lead after David Popkins scored on an RBI base hit by Justin Andrade.

The Anteaters extended their lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Sean Madigan's single brought home Reyes while DJ Crumlich scored on a base hit by Brian Hernandez. Madigan came home on Drew Hillman's sacrifice fly, giving UC Irvine a 5-1 lead.

In the eighth, UC Irvine added one additional run when Jordan Leyland scored on a sacrifice bunt from Jon Hurst.

With the loss, Kupbens moves to 3-5 as he gave up five runs on nine hits. Matt Whitehouse earned the win to improve to 2-0.

UC Davis returns to Dobbins Stadium on Tuesday, Apr. 26, facing San Jose State at 2:30 p.m.
