UC Davis Drops Series Opener At Cal State L.A., 5-2

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Designated hitter Tim Wilkerson slammed a two-run home run in the third inning and the Golden Eagles pitching staff made the lead hold up as Cal State L.A. opened a four-game series with a 5-2 victory over UC Davis in a California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball game Friday afternoon at Reeder Field.

With the loss the Aggies fall to 26-18 on the season, 20-12 in CCAA play. Cal State L.A. improves to 21-24, 17-16 in conference action.

The Golden Eagles got on the board first as in the bottom of the first, Wilkerson laced an RBI single to center, scoring Corey Nolte who reached on an error to lead off the frame. In the third, Mike Miller stroked a one-out single to center before Wilkerson hit his conference-leading 15th home run of the season.

CSLA would increase its lead to 5-0 in the eighth as Scott Moore tripled home Chris Nealon and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Nolte.

The Aggies avoided the shutout as they loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth. Ryan Coultas then connected for a two-run double to left field, scoring Dustin Soderman and Matt Blankenheim for the only two UC Davis runs of the contest.

Trevor Thorton, coming off back-to-back complete games , started for UC Davis and went 6.0 innings, allowing nine hits and three runs. With the loss his record falls to 7-3 on the year. Travis Bearden came on to pitch the final two innings, allowing two runs on one hit.

The Golden Eagles used a trio of pitchers as Kyle Schneider started and went seven strong innings, allowing no runs on six hits while striking out five.. Jack Ell and Philip Springman each pitched an inning, with Springman allowing the two Aggies runs, though both were unearned.

At the plate the Aggies pounded out eight hits in the contest, two each by Robby Tulk, Matt Kamigawachi and Andrew Reisinger. CSLA connected for 10 hits in the game, led by Wilkerson's two hits and three RBIs. Mike Miller and Moore also had a pair of hits.

 

 

These same two teams will play a doubleheader in Los Angeles on Saturday beginning at noon.
