Baseball Drops Opener at No. 21 UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Davis baseball team tallied three more hits than the Anteaters, but No. 21 ranked UC Irvine won on a walkoff squeeze bunt and defeated the Aggies, 5-4, in the opener of a Big West Conference series on Friday night at Anteater Ballpark.

The Aggies (15-24, 3-10 Big West) saw every player in the lineup but one record a hit but scored just four runs on 11 hits with one error. The Anteaters (26-12, 8-5) posted five runs on eight hits with one error in the win.

UC Irvine reliever Mitch Merten (2-0) earned the win after tossing a scoreless ninth inning. The Anteaters' starter, Andrew Thurman, allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits in 7.2 innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

UC Davis reliever Max Cordy (4-5) suffered the loss after allowing one run on no hits and two walks in 0.2 innings. Starter Harry Stanwyck allowed four runs on eight hits in 7.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout.

Steven Patterson, the reigning Big West Field Player of the Week, extended his hitting streak to nine games after going 1-for-4 with a walk against the Anteaters. First baseman Nick Lynch was the star at the plate for the Aggies, as the sophomore went 3-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a RBI. Third baseman Paul Politi had two hits as he became just the third player in program history to eclipse 700 career at-bats in the game.

Politi scored two of the Aggies' runs in the game, including one in UC Davis' two-run third inning that put them ahead.

After UC Irvine took an early, 2-0, lead in the first, the Aggies posted one run in the second on John Williams' RBI double to right center and took the lead with two more runs in the third.

With two outs, designated hitter Mike Mazzara singled to right and scored on Politi's RBI double to left center. Politi advanced to third on the throw home and eventually scored on an error by the shortstop on a ground ball by Patterson.

UC Irvine tied up the game with a run in the fourth but the Aggies jumped back in front on Lynch's RBI single in the fifth.

The Anteaters made it a 4-4 game in the sixth and it remained a tie until the bottom of the ninth.

After a leadoff walk to Jerry McClanahan and a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch moved McClanahan up to third. An intentional walk brought pinch hitter Ryan Cooper to the plate and Cooper delived with a squeeze bunt on a 0-1 count.

UC Davis will meet the Anteaters in the second game of the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The finale is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
