LONG BEACH, Calif. - Jordan Struble's unearned run in the sixth was all the offense No.11 Long Beach State needed as starter Cesar Ramos fired his second shutout of the season in the Dirtbags 4-0 victory over UC Davis in the first of a three-game series Friday evening at Blair Field.
With the loss the Aggies drop their fifth straight and fall to 21-19 on the season. Long Beach State improves to 30-14 overall.
It was a pitchers duel through the first four innings between Ramos and Aggie starter Dave McKae. McKae retired the first 12 Long Beach hitters and had faced the minimum through five innings. Ramos was equally impressive, allowing just two hits through the first six innings.
In the sixth Struble led off with a single through the left side, the first of three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. Tom Sarti then hit a fielders choice to shortstop Brandon Oliver, who committed the game's only error on the play, allowing Struble to come home with the unearned run. McKae then got out of the inning with only the one run to keep the game close.
The Aggies had a chance to tie the game in the eighth with a runner on second and only one out, but two infield outs ended the threat. In the bottom of the inning, McKae hit Tom Sardi to lead off the inning and after two passed and a walk, Jeremy McChesney came on in relief of McKae. McChesney allowed RBI singles to Troy Tulowitzki and Sean Boatright to put the game out of reach.
McKae took the hard-luck loss after tossing seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out six. Offensively, the Aggies managed just five hits, two from Daniel Descalso and one each from Oliver, Grant Hirneise and Jimmy Goetz.
Ramos went the distance for the fourth time this season, striking out three with no walks in the shutout. Following the win, Ramos, who entered the game 23nd in the nation in ERA, lowered his team-leading total to 1.56. As a team the Dirtbags lead the nation, entering the game with a 2.19 ERA. Boatright and Scott Bradley each had two hits to lead the Dirtbag offense.
These same two teams are in action Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
