IRVINE, Calif. - Designated hitter Kevin James launched a three-run blast to right field, accounting for all three UC Davis runs in a 3-2 win over UC Irvine in non-conference collegiate baseball action at Anteater Ballpark in front of 1,010 fans Saturday evening.

The Aggies improve to 15-24 for the season. The Anteaters, ranked 16th in Baseball America and 22nd in the USA Today Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches poll, fall to 30-12-1 overall.

Sophomore righthander Brad McAtee picked up his third win of the year, allowing six hits and fanning four in 6-2/3 innings of work. Junior Eddie Gamboa earned his second save, holding UCI scoreless for the final 2.1 innings. He took the ball with two outs and the bases jammed in the seventh, then punched out senior Matt Morris to end the rally.

The Aggies scored all of their runs off James' bat in the second inning. First baseman Evan Hudson sent a one-out single through the left side of the infield, then catcher Jacob Jefferies singled to right. Two batters later, James blasted a 3-2 pitch to right for his first homer of the year.

Irvine picked one run in each of the third and fourth innings. Third baseman Tyler Vaughn led off the third with a double, then scored on a Ben Orloff squeeze bunt. In the fourth, Vaughn's RBI single brought in center fielder Ollie Linton to cut the lead to a single run.

The Anteaters stranded two runners in scoring position in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to equalize the game. In all, UCI left 11 runners on base.

Anteater righty Wes Etheridge took the loss despite a quality start. He fired seven innings, allowing nine hits and the three runs. He did hold Aggie third baseman Daniel Descalso to an 0-for-2 game, halting the junior's consecutive-game hitting streak at 13 contests.
