Dirtbags Pound Four Home Runs In 9-0 Victory Over Aggies

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Troy Tulowitzki slammed two home runs while Marco Estrada and Matt Fitts combined on a three-hit shutout as No.11 Long Beach State defeated UC Davis 9-0 Saturday afternoon at Blair Field.

With the loss the Aggies fall to 21-20 on the season while the Dirtbags improve to 31-14.

Tulowitzki made it 2-0 in the first with his first blast and then added a solo shot in the sixth to make it 9-0, more than enough for Estrada, who improved to 7-0 this season after allowing just three singles over eight innings while striking out seven. Fitts worked a perfect ninth to complete the shutout. The win marked the second straight shutout for LBSU over the Aggies and lowered the Dirtbags' ERA to 2.09, tops among all Division I schools.

Long Beach State added four runs in the fourth inning as Scott Bradley laced a two-run single which was followed by Chuck Sindlinger's second home run of the season. Evan Longoria added two-run homer in the fifth that made the score 8-0.

In all, the Dirtbags connected for 17 hits and four home runs on the afternoon, the latter tying a Blair Field record.

Aggie starter Michael Potter went just 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits as his record fell to 3-5. Offensively, Brandon Oliver, Kevin James and Grant Hirneise managed singles for the Aggies. Freshman Daniel Descalso went 0-4 on the afternoon, snapping his 10-game hitting streak.

Tulowitzki finished the day going 3-5 with tow home runs, a double, two runs scored and three RBIs, while Sindlinger also added three hits.

These same two teams conclude the series Sunday in Long Beach with a 1 p.m. start.
