STOCKTON, Calif. -- Senior Cameron Olson finished 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, and a career-high five RBI in support of senior left-hander Spencer Henderson's longest outing of the season, helping visiting UC Davis clinch its first series win of the year thanks to a 7-4 victory over Pacific on Saturday evening at Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif.
The Aggies improved to 11-25 overall on the season with the win, taking the first two games of their series with the Tigers to post their seventh straight victory in the series. Prior to this weekend, UC Davis had lost its previous seven weekend series.
Pacific fell to 17-23 overall, hampered by six errors defensively and surrendering 11 hits.
Henderson (1-2), whose longest previous outing this season was 5.2 innings a week ago in a start against UC Irvine on April 22, pitched into the eighth inning on Saturday, allowing four runs on eight hits, but striking out a season-high seven over 7.2 innings of work -- just one off his career high of eight set at UC Santa Barbara on May 3, 2015.
Junior right-hander Justin Mullins entered in relief in the eighth with two runners on and a run already in, but got the Aggies off the hook with a strikeout, and finished with two more during a perfect ninth inning to record his first career save.
Fineas Del Bonta-Smith (4-3) suffered the loss in relief of starter Jake Jenkins, allowing two runs on just two hits in one-third of an inning.
An RBI groundout by Gio Brusa in the first and a solo home run to left in the second by J.J. Wagner (his sixth of the year) staked the Tigers to an early lead before Olson cut the deficit in half with his second long ball of the season -- a shot over the wall in center field in the fourth -- to make it 2-1.
Another home run -- this one off the bat of Lucas Halsted in the home half of the fourth -- got the run back for Pacific, but the Aggies would answer back once again with a rally in the fifth to tie the game. A lead-off single by Justin Allen and an error put a pair on for Alex Roeser, who laced a single back through the box to score Allen and make it 3-2.
An error on a ground ball by Mark Cardinalli loaded the bases with one out for Olson, who came through with a deep fly ball to left, enough to plate the speedy Tanner Bily to tie the game.
With momentum on its side, UC Davis took its first lead of the night off Del Bonta-Smith in the seventh as Brad Pluschkell led off with a single to center that was misplayed, allowing the sophomore to reach second base. Bily quickly followed that with a double to right to push across Pluschkell with the go-ahead run and, after another pitching change, Olson laced an RBI single off reliever Bryce Lombardi to give the Aggies a two-run lead.
The double extended Bily's hitting streak to eight games -- the longest by an Aggie hitter this season -- and allowed the senior to reach base safely for the 11th consecutive contest.
The Tigers made things interesting in the eighth as an RBI single by Nate Verlin made it a one-run game, scoring Kevin Sandri to bring Pacific to within 5-4, but UC Davis put it out of reach in the ninth, as Pluschkell reached on an error, Cardinalli singled with two outs, and Olson tripled to centerfield to score both for the final 7-4 advantage.
Olson's three hits marked his eighth multi-hit game of the season -- half of those games with three-or-more hits -- while the five RBI gave the senior his team-best fifth multi-RBI contest of the year. Freshman Caleb Van Blake also recorded his first multi-hit game of his career, including collecting his first career extra-base hit with a double in the second.
Danny Mayer finished 3-for-4 to lead the Tigers.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon (May 1) at 1 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium in Davis, Calif.
