LONG BEACH, Calif. - Evan Longoria and Steve Velazco each had three hits and Long Beach State scored nine unanswered runs as the Dirtbags defeated UC Davis, 9-1, to complete the three-game sweep Sunday afternoon at Blair Field.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 21-21 on the season while Long Beach State improves to 32-14.
The Aggies scored their only run of the series in the top of the first when Brandon Oliver led off the game with a double to left, then came home to score on a sacrifice fly from Daniel Descalso. The lead did not last long as in the bottom of the first, the Dirtbags strung together three straight two-out hits, followed by a Chris Jones RBI double to make it 3-1.
Long Beach State added four more runs in the fourth inning on back-to-back two-run singles from Chuck Sindlinger and Danny Mocny, pushing the lead to 7-1. Aggie starter Eddie Gamboa did not get out of the inning as he gave up seven runs on seven hits in suffering his first loss of the season.
The Dirtbags closed out the scoring in the fifth as Scott Bradley and Mocny connected for RBI singles.
While the Dirtbags' offense was clicking, it pitching staff lived up to its rankings as the nation's leader in ERA. Jared Hughes won his sixth straight decision by working 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits with nine strikouts. Three other Long Beach pitchers combined for the final 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Aggies managed just five hits on the day, two from Oliver and one each from Lukas Kirby, Kevin James and Dan Baldini. Long Beach State had 17 hits in the game, led by Longoria and Velazco, while Mocny added three RBI.
UC Davis has no time to rest as it hosts Stanford Monday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. Gametime is set for 2:30 p.m.
