Late-Inning Surge Secures Series-Opening Win For Long Beach State

Final Stats

LONG BEACH, Calif. - T.J. MIttelstaedt homered and finished with a game-high four RBIs, and Long Beach State scored 11 combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings to break open a 5-3 lead and defeat UC Davis 16-3 during the opening game of a Big West Conference series in front of 1,272 fans at Blair Field Friday night.

The win improves the 49ers above .500 at 21-20 overall and 8-5 in conference play. The Aggies fall to 7-33 overall and 1-12.

Junior Tim Busbin led UC Davis by drivine home a team-best two runs off a single. Fellow junior Kyle Mihaylo had an RBI and joined junior Ty Kelly and redshirt freshman Eric Johnson with a team-high of two hits.

All three of the Aggies' runs came in the sixth inning to cut the lead to two runs at 5-3. Busbin had a two-run single in the inning while MIhaylo added a sacrifice fly.

The Dirtbags scored four runs in the bottom half of the innning and then scored seven runs on only two hits in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Along with Mittelstaedt, who also finished with three hits and three runs scored, Jordan Casas and John HIll finished with two RBIs to help lead the charge.

On the mound, Long Beach starter Adam Wilk gave up three runs on six hits but strukc out four batters en route to his seventh victory of the season. UC Davis starter Scott Chew also struck out four in the loss.
