NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Five UC Davis hitters finished with two hits and drove in at least one run, but it wasn't enough offense to push the visiting Aggies past Cal State Northridge, as the host Matadors scored nine times in the first three innings en route to a 13-6 win in the opener of a Big West Conference series on Friday at Matador Field.

The loss was the fourth straight for UC Davis, which fell to 17-24 overall and 3-13 in league play while dropping its fifth-in-a-row to Northridge. The Matadors improved to 17-28 overall and 5-8 in conference play, winning their second straight.

Sophomore Tanner Bily (10 games) and junior Kevin Barker (nine games) each extended lengthy hitting streaks as part of that group for the Aggies, who collected 13 hits on the day -- seven of those doubles to fall just two shy of the school single-game record set against Cal Poly in 2005 -- but were out-hit by Northridge, which plated its 13 runs on 16 hits. One of Barker's hits was a double in the ninth, extending a run that has seen him hit a double for the fifth consecutive game.

Nick Lynch, Spencer Henderson, and John Williams also finished with two hits for UC Davis, which saw eight of its nine starters finish with a hit, while Williams drove home two runs for the Aggies with a double in the fourth.

Nico Garbella finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI for the Matadors, which exploded out of the gates be sending 11 batters to the plate as part of a six-run first inning off starter Harry Stanwyck (2-6), adding a single run in the second and two more in the third to build a 9-0 lead.

Held to just one hit to that point, UC Davis finally got on the board in the fourth on Williams' extra-base hit, scoring Lynch (walk) and Henderson (double) and make it 9-2. The Aggies continued to rally with three more in the fifth, starting the inning with four straight hits, including run-scoring knocks from Barker and Bily to close to within 9-4. Henderson's RBI double two batters later made it 9-5 with two outs, but that would be as close as UC Davis would get.

A two-run home run by William Colantono in the seventh and RBI hits from Garbella and Alexis Mercado in the eighth offset Lynch's run-scoring single in the ninth to complete the scoring.

Brycen Rutherford (4-4) earned the win for Northridge despite allowing five runs on 10 hits and walking three in 6 1/3 innings of work. Stanwyck was tagged for nine runs on 10 hits in just four innings to be stuck with the loss.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday (May 3) at 1 p.m., with right-hander Spencer Koopmans (3-1, 3.26 ERA) scheduled to take the mound for the Aggies against the Matadors' Jerry Keel (0-7, 3.39 ERA).
