Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Cal State Northridge scored five runs in a big eighth inning and the UC Davis baseball team fell, 10-4, to the second-place Matadors in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.

The Aggies (16-29, 3-15 Big West) were swept after posting four runs on seven hits with one error while the  Matadors (29-18, 14-4), winners of nine straight league games, scored 10 runs on eight hits with no errors. Aggie pitchers issued nine walks, hit a batter and were called for a pair of balks.

Cal State Northridge starter John Salas (3-5) picked up the win after allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings with no walks and three strikeouts. UC Davis starter Evan Wolf (2-3) suffered the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits in 6.2 innings with five walks and no strikeouts.

UC Davis first baseman Spencer Henderson went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Aggies while Mike Mazzara hit his first career home run, a solo shot to left in the first inning.

Cal State Northridge left fielder Cal Vogelsang went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and shortstop Kyle Attl homered for the second straight game.

It was a 4-4 ballgame until Attl homered in the seventh to give the Matadors a 5-4 lead. Cal State Northridge broke the game open, however, in the next inning with five runs on three hits in the eighth.

With one out, the Matadors loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. Pinch hitter Anthony Lombardo singled through the right side to score a pair of runs before another walk loaded the bases once again. After a strikeout, the Aggies walked in runs in back-to-back at-bats.

Cal State Northridge relievers held the Aggies to just one hit over the eighth and ninth innings and the Matadors didn't issue a walk all game.

UC Davis wraps up its five-game homestand at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday against rival Sacramento State. The Aggies will be on the road the next two weekends - at Pacific and Hawai'i - before closing out the 2013 season at home from May 23-25 against UC Santa Barbara.
