SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Sophomore Ryan Anderson slugged his sixth home run of the season to extend his hitting streak to nine games and stake visiting UC Davis to an early lead, but host UC Santa Barbara bounced back with six unanswered en route to a, 6-3, win over the Aggies in the Big West Conference series opener on Friday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The loss dropped the Aggies to 13-24 overall and 5-11 in conference play, while the Gauchos inched closer to the .500 mark, improving to 20-22 overall and 6-7 in league contests.

Anderson's blast broke up a scoreless contest in the third as Elijah Ontiveros led off the inning by reaching on an error and moving up 90 feet on the throw. Ryan Hooper followed by being hit by a pitch and both were sacrificed over by Jacob Thomas. That brought Anderson to the plate, who sent the second pitch he saw from UCSB starter Kyle Nelson (6-3) over the wall in left for a 3-0 lead.

The home run brought him even with teammate Cameron Olson for the team lead and was the 25th on the year for UC Davis -- the second-highest total in the program's Division I era, trailing only the 34 hit in the Aggies' inaugural Division I season in 2008 -- while pushing his team-best RBI total to 28 on the year.

It was also the eighth career home run for Anderson, moving him into seventh on the school's career Division I list alongside Scott Lyman (2009-11), Ty Kelly (2008-09), and Scott Kalush (2009-12).

However, that would be the extent of the offense for UC Davis, which couldn't find much luck against Nelson the rest of the way, stranding five runners on base from the fourth through the ninth innings, four of those in scoring position.

Meanwhile, the Gauchos' offense caught fire after a quiet start, scoring four times in the decisive fourth inning to take the lead for good. UCSB sent eight batters to the plate in the frame, breaking up the shutout on a sacrifice fly by JJ Muno and loading the bases on a single and a pair of walks for Armani Smith, who worked the count full before lacing a double down the right field line to clear the bases and make it 4-3.

An RBI groundout by Tevin Mitchell in the sixth and a leadoff home run by Smith to start the seventh capped the scoring for the Gauchos.

Nelson went the distance for the win, allowing two earned on six hits -- just two of those hits after UC Davis' three-run inning -- walking a pair and striking out six. Aggie starter Orlando Razo (5-3) took the loss, tagged for four earned on seven hits and striking out four before giving way to Blake Hannah to start the seventh.

Hooper, who entered the game with a team-best 10-game hitting streak, had his run snapped, but did reach base safely for the 11th consecutive contest after being hit by a pitch. Cameron Briggs finished 2-for-4 to help pace the Aggies' offense, collecting his third multi-hit game of the season.

With rain in the forecast scheduled for Sunday, the two teams have decided to move up their series and play a doubleheader on Saturday (May 6) beginning at 11:30 a.m., with the final game to follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
