Aggies sweep doubleheader to take series

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Sophomore left-hander Robert Garcia tossed a three-hit shutout in the nightcap and sophomore Ryan Anderson drove in three of his team's five runs on the day, helping lift visiting UC Davis to a sweep of its doubleheader and a series victory over UC Santa Barbara by the scores of 3-2 and 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The wins helped propel the Aggies, who swept a doubleheader to clinch a series for the second time this season (Hawai'i on April 22), to their third Big West Conference series victory of the year, improving to 15-24 overall and 7-11 in league play. The seven conference wins surpassed last season's total and are the most since UC Davis finished 9-15 against Big West opponents in 2015.

UCSB, meanwhile, fell to 20-24 overall and 6-9 in conference, dropping its fourth Big West series in five tries this season.

Garcia, along with teammate Orlando Razo, became the first Aggie pitchers to throw shutouts in the same season since Anthony Kupbens, Dayne Quist (twice), and Tom Briner (twice), did so in 2012. Garcia's 11 strikeouts also marked the third time this season that a UC Davis hurler has finished with double-digit punch outs, following Razo's Division I era single-game record of 13 against Utah Valley on Feb. 25 and his 10 strikeouts against Cal Poly on April 14.

The Aggies return to the diamond on Tuesday (May 9) with a midweek road game at Pacific, taking the field at Klein Family Field for a 6 p.m. first pitch in Stockton, Calif. UC Davis then returns home to open a stretch of seven of its next eight at home with a three-game series against UC Riverside beginning Friday (May 12) at 2:30 p.m.

GAME 1: UC Davis 3, UC Santa Barbara 2
Senior right-hander Justin Mullins allowed just one earned run on five hits while striking out four, and the Aggies backed him with a three-run sixth to erase an early deficit, lifting UC Davis to a victory in the opener, 3-2.

Mullins (2-3) went 6.2 innings to pick up his second win in his last three starts, while junior Zach Stone came on to notch his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Junior Connor Loar got the Aggies out of a jam in the seventh, stranding runners at the corners by inducing Armani Smith into an inning-ending fielder's choice.

A Sam Cohen home run and a wild pitch put two runs on the board in the second inning for the Gauchos, who held that advantage until UC Davis was able to scratch across the only runs it would need in the sixth.

Ryan Hooper singled with one out and went to third on a Cameron Olson single to right with two outs. That brought up Anderson, who collected RBIs four and five of the series with a double down the line in right to tie the game. Anderson, who went to third on a throwing error on the play, then came home one batter later when Ignacio Diaz singled through the left side for the go-ahead score.

After escaping a UCSB scoring chance in the seventh, the Aggies wriggled off the hook once again in the eighth as Stone induced a "strike 'em out-throw 'em out" double play to end the inning, catching Cohen trying to swipe second as Billy Fredrick swung and missed, and then left the tying run on base in the ninth, getting a pair of ground balls around a strikeout.

Chris Clements (1-7) suffered the loss for UC Santa Barbara, allowing the three runs on nine hits over six innings and striking out five, while Kevin Chandler threw three shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two to keep the Gauchos close.

Every Aggies starter had a hit, leading UC Davis to a 10-6 advantage in the category for the game, as freshman Alejandro Lara was 2-for-3 to pace the visitors. Cohen led UCSB with a 2-for-2 day at the plate.

GAME 2: UC Davis 2, UC Santa Barbara 0
Sophomore left-hander Robert Garcia tossed the Aggies' second shutout of the year, scattering just three hits while striking out a career-high 11 batters en route to a 2-0 win that clinched the series victory.

In his finest outing of the season, Garcia (2-5) retired 16 consecutive batters at one point in the game, limiting the Gauchos to a double in the second and singles in the third and eighth innings, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position in the process.

He struck out at least one batter in eight of the nine innings -- 10 of those the swinging variety -- and received help from his defense, which turned double plays in the eighth and ninth innings to snuff out any late Gaucho rallies -- including a 4-6-3 "twin-killing" to end the game.

The Aggies got all the runs they would need in the third as a fielder's choice by Jacob Thomas and a single through the right side put runners at the corners for Ryan Anderson, who pulled a base hit through the left side to score Thomas for the 1-0 lead. UC Davis then loaded the bases when Alex Aguiar was hit by a pitch to bring up Caleb Van Blake, whose ground ball to short was enough to bring Olson home for the 2-0 advantage.

Santa Barbara starter Chris Lincoln (1-2) worked out of a jam in the fourth, stranding a runner at third with the Aggies threatening once again, and UC Davis had the bases loaded in the sixth, but reliever Steven Ledesma got a two-out ground ball to end the inning.

Lincoln suffered the loss despite allowing just the two runs on seven hits, striking out six over five innings of work.

Anderson, Olson, and Ryan Hooper each finished with a pair of hits for the game -- the first two of whom extended their hitting streaks to 11 games, which are the longest by an Aggie this season.
