Matadors top Aggies in series opener

May 11, 2018

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.Cameron Briggs and Joseph Myers each finished with two hits apiece, but the host Matadors scored four times in the fifth inning to break open a one-run game, lifting CSUN to a 6-2 win over UC Davis in the opener of a three-game Big West Conference series on Friday afternoon at Matador Field in Northridge, Calif.

The Aggies fell to 15-29 overall and 7-12 in Big West play with the loss, while the Matadors improved to 22-26 on the season with a 10-9 league record.

Matt Blais (3-7) suffered the loss for the Aggies, charged with four earned runs on nine hits and striking out three over 4.1 innings of work. Walker Armstrong was credited with the win for CSUN, limiting UC Davis to just two runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings, striking out three.

UC Davis struck first on Friday afternoon, scoring on a groundout from Logan Denholm after loading the bases on a pair of walks and an infield single from senior Ryan Hooper to make it 1-0 in the visitor half of the second.

But the Aggies’ lead was short-lived, as the Matadors claimed the lead in the third, bringing two runs across on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Trevor Casanova and Albee Weiss. Casanova went on to finish 2-for-3 on the afternoon with one run and one RBI.

The fifth inning would see four more runs cross the plate for CSUN, including a two-run shot from Brandon Bohning, who paced the lineup finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Three singles, an error, and a wild pitch would complete the rest of the Matadors’ four-run effort to make it 6-1.

The Aggies threatened with a two-out rally in the sixth, putting runners on first and second on singles from Myers and Briggs, but UC Davis could not convert.

The seventh would see a similar effort by the Aggie offense—runners on first and second with two outs—but this time, junior Ryan Anderson would give the Aggies what they were looking for with an RBI-single up the middle to make it 6-2.

But the fans at Matador Field would see no other scores from either squad, resulting in a 6-2 win for CSUN in the series opener on Friday afternoon.

Games two and three of the series are scheduled for Saturday (May 12) at 1 p.m. and Sunday (May 13) at 1 p.m., respectively. Aggie fans can find links to live stats and radio for tomorrow's game by visiting UC Davis baseball's schedule page found on UCDavisAggies.com.
