DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore Ryan Anderson's two-out single into the right centerfield gap plated Jacob Thomas from third with the winning run, capping a UC Davis rally from down two runs to collect a, 4-3, 10-inning victory over visiting UC Riverside in the opening game of a three-game Big West Conference series on Friday afternoon at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.
The Aggies improved to 16-25 overall and 8-11 in conference play, winning for the fourth time in their last six outings, while the Highlanders fell to 18-27 overall and 4-12 in the Big West with the loss.
Anderson's third game-winning hit of the year came after his team had come back to tie the game in the ninth as Cameron Olson hit his seventh home run of the year in the eighth to bring UC Davis within a run, and Mark Cardinalli slugged a pinch-hit solo shot down the left field line for his first of the year to make it 3-all.
Olson's home run was his seventh of the season -- the most by an Aggie slugger since Kyle Mihaylo hit the same number in 2010. Meanwhile, Cardinalli's round-tripper was the second of his career and his first since leaving the yard against UC Irvine on April 22, 2016.
A 6-3 double play to end the top of the 10th left the go-ahead run at third base for UC Riverside, setting the stage for the Aggies to win it in the home half. Angel Landazuri (3-4) got the first two outs on balls hit back to the mound before Thomas came up and dropped a single into centerfield.
Olson followed with a rocket into the right field corner that took a Highlander bounce right to the fielder, who hurried the ball back in to keep Thomas at third. Anderson then came up and worked the count in his favor before getting a pitch to drive into the right centerfield gap, sneaking it under a diving Matt Hardy to easily score Thomas for the winning score -- the fifth time this season that the junior has plated the winning run.
Anderson finished with two hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games -- the longest by an Aggie since Tino Lipson hit safely in 13 straight from March 7-April 4, 2015. The run ranks tied for the sixth-longest in the program's Division I history.
Zach Stone (5-2) earned the win in relief, getting the final two outs of the 10th inning on the double play. Starter Orlando Razo was tagged with a no-decision, allowing three runs on seven hits, striking out seven batters without a walk in eight strong innings before giving way to Blake Peters, who gave up two hits and struck out one in 1.1 innings of work.
Stone's win gave him 12 for his career, moving him into fourth on the program's Division I wins list, just two back of Max Cordy (2012-15) for third.
Riverside was first on the board in the second as Tony Gudino singled with two outs and came home on Matt Hardy's third home run of the season over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead.
UC Davis pulled a run back in the fourth as Olson reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored two batters later on Ignacio Diaz's sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. The Highlanders answered back with another run in the sixth as Mark Contreras tripled to right field and scored on Michael Farris' single to centerfield to make it 3-1.
Anderson and Olson each finished with a pair of hits for the Aggies, reaching base safely for the 15th and 14th consecutive games, respectively. Meanwhile, Anderson's RBI gave him 32 overall on the year and at least one in seven of the team's last nine games.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday afternoon (May 13) at 1 p.m.
