Aggies win series behind Mullins' gem

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis scored twice in the eighth inning to back a combined four-hit shutout by senior Justin Mullins and Zach Stone, lifting the Aggies to their fifth series victory of the season with a 2-0 shutout of UC Riverside on Saturday afternoon at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.

The Aggies won for the fifth time in their last seven games, improving to 17-25 overall and 9-11 in Big West Conference, and will look for their first series sweep of the season on Mother's Day with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The Highlanders fell to 18-28 overall and 4-13 in conference play with the loss.

The four Big West series victories for UC Davis are the most for the program since the Aggies won five in conference during the 2012 campaign -- the most since joining the league in 2008.

Mullins (3-3) pitched a gem, allowing just four hits over 8.1 shutout innings, walking just three and striking out six on the day. He stranded seven base runners on the day -- three of those in scoring position, including a runner at third in the third inning -- and retired 11 consecutive hitters at one point in the game after the lead-off batter reached on an error to start the fifth.

Junior right-hander Zach Stone then came on and shut the door for his second save of the year as Mullins left to a standing ovation from the hometown crowd, striking out one and getting a ground ball to the right side to end the game.

Riverside starter Alex Fagalde (6-4) took the loss despite throwing 7.1 shutout innings, allowing the two runs on five hits, walking five, and striking out five.

UC Davis managed nine base runners through the first six innings, but didn't get a runner to third until the sixth. They stranded two in scoring position during that stretch before finally breaking through in the eighth for the go-ahead runs.

Jacob Thomas laced a one-out double down the left field line -- his second in as many at bats -- to start the rally and Cameron Olson was intentionally walked, putting a pair on for Ryan Anderson. The sophomore, who had the walk-off single in Friday's 4-3 victory came through once again, rolling a single through the right side to bring Thomas home from second as the throw from the outfield was cut off for a 1-0 lead.

After a pitching change, Ignacio Diaz quickly made it a 2-0 game, lifting a sinking liner into left field that fell just off the tip of the glove of the charging Colby Schultz, allowing pinch-runner Mason Novak to come home from third for an insurance score.

Anderson, who also singled in the second inning, extended his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games -- tied for the fifth-longest in the program's Division I history and the longest by an Aggie since Paul Politi set the mark at 19 games from May 13, 2012 to March 1, 2013.
