NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Senior Ryan Hooper slugged the tying run for the Aggies in the fourth, but Kevin Riley’s three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth lifted CSUN to a late 5-2 victory over UC Davis in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Matador Field.

The Aggies slip to 15-31 on the season with a 7-14 Big West record, while the Matadors improve to 24-26 overall and 12-9 in league play.

Senior Connor Loar (3-3) suffered the loss for the Aggies, charged with three earned runs on three hits and striking out two over the final two innings. Tei Vanderford (4-2) was credited with the win—his second of the series—after throwing 0.1 innings of scoreless, hitless relief.

The Matadors were first to get on the board in the home half of the first, with Justin Toerner drawing a pass via catcher’s interference to lead off the inning and coming around to score on an RBI-double from Albee Weiss to make it 1-0.

The Matadors maintained the lead over the next two innings, until Hooper equalized the score at one-all with a solo shot to right center field in the fourth—marking his fifth round tripper of the year and 12th of his career. Hooper concluded the day 1-for-3 with one run and an RBI.

The Aggies then claimed their first lead of the day two innings later as Caleb Van Blake led off the inning with his 11th double of the season. Junior Ryan Anderson then put runners on the corners with a single to right center field before Van Blake crossed the plate on a groundout from Hooper.

But the Aggies’ one-run advantage was short-lived as CSUN answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Riley Conlan, following a double from Kevin Riley to make it 2-2.

The Aggies threatened in the visitor half of the ninth, putting runners on the corners on singles from Logan Denholm and pinch-hitter Joseph Myers, but UC Davis came up empty.

Denholm paced the offense with a 2-for-3 finish at the plate on a pair of singles.

With one out in the books and a runner on first, the Aggies intentionally walked Weiss to face Riley at the plate. But the first baseman ended the series with one swing, belting his eighth homer of the season to lift the Matadors to a late victory on Sunday afternoon, 5-2. Riley paced the Matador lineup with a pair of hits and runs scored as well as three RBI on the day.

The Aggies resume action with a mid-week battle at San Francisco on Tuesday (May 15) at 3 p.m. at Benedetti Diamond.
