Box Score

IRVINE, Calif. - Chris Nicoll struck out 10 while Jaime Martinez's two-run double in the seventh provided the offense as UC Irvine defeated UC Davis 3-1 in the opener of a three-game series Friday evening at Anteater Ballpark.

With the loss the Aggies fall to 23-23 on the season while UC Irvine improves to 26-21.

It was a pitchers duel into the middle innings as Aggie starter Dave McKae and Nicoll put up zeros through the first six innings. UC Davis finally broke through in the seventh, capitalizing on a Nicoll failed pickoff attempt at first as Lukas Kirby came all the way around from second on the play.

The lead was short-lived as UC Irvine got to McKae for three in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back-back hits to start the inning, the final one a two-run double of the bat of Martinez, put the Anteaters ahead 2-1. Following an error by McKae on a sacrifice attempt, Gregg Wallis closed out the scoring with a single to left to bring home Martinez for the 3-1 lead.

UC Davis did not threaten in either of the last two innings as Blair Erickson came on in the ninth to pick up his ninth save of the season.

UCI collected four hits in the first three innings, but the Aggies defense ended each frame with a double play to keep McKae out of trouble. He then settled down, retiring nine of the next 10 hitters, allowing just a one-out single in the sixth leading up the three-run seventh.

Offensively, UC Davis struggled as it had only five hits in the game and only two runners reached scoring position. Kirby had a pair of hits while Grant Hirneise, Daniel Descalso and Ryan Royster each added one. Sophomore Brandon Oliver saw his seven-game hitting streak come to an end after going 0-4.

McKae took the loss after working seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out six. Nicoll did his counterpart one better, fanning 10 without a walk while allowing just one run. Danny Miramontes and Mark Wagner led the nine-hit attack with two hits each.

These same two teams play game two of the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
