IRVINE, Calif. - Ollie Linton collected four hits while Steve Schroer and Jimmy Alstot combined on an eight-hit shutout as UC Irvine defeated UC Davis 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 23-24 on the season while the Anteaters improve to 27-21.
For the second straight game the Aggie bats were held in check as Schroer scattered six hits while striking out seven over the first 6 1/3 innings. Schroer gave way to Alstot and the senior righthander went the rest of the way, striking out three as UC Irvine has limited UC Davis to just one run over the first two games of the series.
Offensively, Schroer got all the help he needed in the bottom of the first as Jaime Martinez lined a two-out, RBI double to the gap in left-center scoring Linton. The next batter, Matt Anderson, made to 2-0 with a single that scored Martinez.
Aggie starter Michael Potter settled down after the first, allowing just one hit over the next three innings. But the Anteaters put up three more in the bottom of the fifth, courtesy of three straight, one-out singles after a leadoff walk. UC Irvine closed out the scoring with two more runs in the seventh. After three of the first four batters reached base, Eddie Gamboa came on to get out of the inning, but the damage was done.
Brandon Oliver led an eight-hit Aggie attacked with a single and a double as the only UC Davis played with more than one hit. Potter worked the first 6 1/3 innings, allowing all seven runs on eight hits as his record falls to 4-6.
Linton had four of the Anteaters' nine hits, while adding two runs scored and two RBI for the afternoon. Danny Miramontes also drove in a pair in the game.
These same two teams complete the three-game series with a Sunday afternoon tilt beginning at 1 p.m.
