DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis received a hit from every batter in the lineup and the Aggies took an 11-6 win over visiting Santa Clara in a nonconference matchup Wednesday at Dobbins Stadium.
With the win, UC Davis now stands at 22-27 overall while Santa Clara is now 21-27 on the year.
David Popkins pitched six innings for UC Davis and recorded a career-high five strikeouts to move to 3-1 on the year. The sophomore gave up six runs on nine hits, but held Santa Clara to only two hits until the fifth inning.
Santa Clara's Chris Mendoza received the loss to drop to 4-5 overall after he gave up seven runs on six hits.
UC Davis jumped to a large lead in the very first inning as the Aggies bat through the lineup to put up seven runs on seven hits. Justin Schafer and Seth Batty hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, then scored on a triple from Popkins who also served as designated hitter for the day. It was Popkin's second triple in as many days. Popkins would then come around to score on a wild pitch to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of UC Davis.
After Kyle Mihaylo's fly out, UC Davis had two men on for Kevin Grove's RBI base hit which scored Scott Lyman from second base. Justin Andrade then loaded the bases after he reached first base on a fielding error by Ryan Rieger. Scott Kalush hit a sacrifice fly to bring Paul Politi home and UC Davis reloaded the bases after Schafer walked. Batty would hit his second single of the inning to score Andrade and Kevin Grove to bring the score to 7-0.

The Aggies recorded three more runs in the second inning. Lyman started off with a single, then moved to second on a well-placed bunt down the third base line by Kyle Mihaylo. Grove loaded the bases with no outs after being hit by a pitch and the Santa Clara pitching staff would give up back-to-back walks to Andrade and Kalush for two more Aggie runs. Grove would score UC Davis' third run off a fielder's choice RBI by Schafer.
UC Davis took an 11-0 lead into the fifth inning, but the Santa Clara bats began to rally as the Broncos would put up six runs of their own. Drew Ozanne led off with a base hit up the middle, then advanced to second after Popkins walked Blake Leyva. The Aggies would get two outs in the next two Bronco at bats as Matt Ozanne hit a fly ball to center field and Seth Batty's sliding catch in foul territory got Evan Peters out.
The Broncos regrouped and, with two men on, Tommy Medica's single followed by an error by Schafer scored Drew Ozanne. The Broncos would score two more runs with back-to-back RBI base hits from Geoff Klein and Rieger and Patrick Terry's double scored Klein to bring the score to 11-4. Lucas Herbst's base hit brought home Terry and Rieger before UC Davis would get the final out of the inning.
Santa Clara would threaten briefly at times throughout the rest of the game but relief pitcher CJ Blom would give up only one hit in his 2.1 innings of work to keep the Broncos from scoring.
Lyman went 3-for-5 on the day with three runs while Politi was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Popkins' triple was his only hit of the day while Batty went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
UC Davis will close out the 2010 season with seven straight road games, beginning with a three-game Big West Conference series at UC Santa Barbara. The first game of the series is Friday at 2 p.m.
