All-AGcess: UC Davis baseball opens practice (VIDEO)

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis baseball team began practice for the 2011 season Friday as head coach Rex Peters and the Aggies look toward the season opener on Feb. 18.

The Aggies finished the 2010 campaign with an overall record of 26-29 and a Big West Conference mark of 9-15.

UC Davis hosts crosstown rival Sacramento State in the season opener for both teams at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium. The Aggies then travel to Hornet Field for a 1 p.m. match up Feb. 19 before returning to Davis for the final game of the series.

"It's definitely exciting," said junior team captain Eric Johnson. "We know that every team in the Big West is out there right now working hard and we want to be out there working harder. We're just going to get after it for the next three weeks and get ourselves as ready for the season as we can."

Peters enters the 2011 season returning nearly all of his significant contributors from last season, including All-Big West Conference First Team honoree David Popkins as well as honorable mention Scott Lyman. Lefty Dayne Quist returns to the pitching rotation for the Aggies and will be joined by Lyman who pulled double duty for Peters throughout the 2010 season as a pitcher and outfielder.

UC Davis was selected to finish eighth in the 2011 Big West Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll.

The 2011 schedule consists of a full slate of nonconference games against opponents throughout the Bay Area, including Stanford, Cal, Santa Clara and San Jose State. Big West Conference play begins April 1 when the Aggies host Cal State Fullerton for a three-game series.
