QUICK HITS
• UC Davis claimed a 3-1 series victory over Utah at Dobbins Stadium in a four-game series that culminated in the Aggies taking a 9-8 extra-inning win on Monday.
• Senior lefty Dayne Quist was masterful in the season opener, fanning 12 Utah batters over six complete innings... He allowed just three hits and did not walk anyone.
• Redshirt freshman shortstop Alex Lipson provided some heroics of his own in Monday's 10-inning win, turning a triple play in the third inning... He caught a line drive, then stepped on second base before throwing to first for the final out of the inning.
Brett Morgan currently leads the Aggies with a .417 batting average and three stolen bases.
• San Jose State went 1-2 against San Francisco over the weekend and plays its fourth game in five days on Tuesday against UC Davis.
Andre Mercurio and Caleb Natov hit safely for the Spartans in all three games.

ALL-TIME VS. SAN JOSE STATE
• San Jose State owns a 40-26 in the all-time series against UC Davis... After playing each other six times in 2011, the Aggies and Spartans will meet just four times during the 2012 season.
• Last year, the Spartans claimed four-of-six games from the Aggies, but UC Davis won the series finale 6-5 on Brett Morgan's walkoff two-RBI single on May 4, 2011.

HEAD COACHES
Matt Vaughn was named head coach of the UC Davis baseball team in August 2011 and begins his 20th overall season with Aggie baseball... He pitched for the Aggies from 1989-92, then stayed on as an assistant and associate head coach... Vaughn will also continue his duties as pitching coach.

• Sam Piraro enters his 25th season as head coach of San Jose State... He is the only head coach to guide the Spartans to multiple NCAA and WAC Tournament appearances... Piraro is a four-time WAC Coach of the Year who has led his squad to five 40-win seasons, including a school-record 45 victories in 2002.

SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE
• The Spartans dropped their first two games of the season to San Francisco, but rallied with a 7-3 win over the Dons on Sunday.
• San Jose State is currently in the midst of playing six-of-eight games at home, with Tuesday's matchup against the Aggies marking its first of four straight home games.
• Freshman outfielder Andre Mercurio hit safely in all three games for San Jose State and leads the team offensively... He went 6-for-9 with two runs and a stolen base.
• Junior Zack Jones was named the WAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year while newcomer Mike Aldrete was named to the preseason All-WAC team as a utility player.

LAST TIME OUT
• UC Davis took 3-of-4 games from Utah in the season opener for both teams, culminating in a 9-8 thrilling extra-inning win on Monday.
• Senior lefty Dayne Quist struck out 12 Utah batters on Friday, allowing just three hits and no walks in the Aggies' 3-0 win.
• UC Davis fell 7-1 on Saturday, but rallied for a 6-2 victory on Sunday.
• In Monday's finale, David Popkins was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and nobody out in the tenth inning to bring in a run for a 9-8 extra-inning victory.

RI-QUIST-ULOUS
• Senior southpaw Dayne Quist was lights out on the mound in Friday's season opener against Utah.
• He struck out a career-high 12 Utah batters and did not allow a walk while giving up just three hits in six shutout innings.
• Quist retired eight straight to open the game, including five consecutive strikeouts, in the first three innings... He fanned the side again in the fourth, then got the Aggies out of a jam in the fifth with another strike out with two outs and two on.
• He retired the side in the sixth before leaving the game.

LOOK OUT FOR LIPSON
• Redshirt freshman Alex Lipson made his Aggie debut over the weekend and did not disappoint, hitting .357 (5-for-14) with a run and five RBI in his first games as an Aggie.
• He drove in three runs in UC Davis' 6-2 win on Sunday, then went 1-for-3 with two more RBI in Monday's 9-8 extra inning win.
• Lipson also stole a base and drew three walks.

TURNING... THREE?
• UC Davis turned a triple play against Utah - the first since Mar. 4, 2007 - thanks to shortstop Alex Lipson.
• Lipson collected a line drive, stepped on second base to tag the runner out there, then threw over to first for the final out in the third inning on Monday.
Evan Hudson last accomplished the feat against Portland on Mar. 4, 2007 in Dobbins Stadium.

WELCOME!
• The season-opening series against Utah marked the debut of eight field players and four pitchers for UC Davis.
Alex Lipson started all four games while outfielder John Williams and designated hitter Nick Lynch each started three games... The trio combined to go 12-of-35 (.342) with five runs, a triple and nine RBI.
Austin Logan started at first base on Monday and went 1-for-2... Kevin Barker started in right field on Monday and went 1-for-3 with two runs... Evan Wolf appeared as a pinch hitter in two games, while Evan Heptig and Izaak Silva each made appearances as well.
• On the mound, Ben Burke earned his first start of the year on Monday after providing relief on Friday for UC Davis... He did not allow a run and gave up just two hits in five complete innings of work... Craig Lanza, Spencer Koopmans and Patrick Hennessey each provided relief for UC Davis.

HITTIN' THE ROAD
• Tuesday's game against San Jose State marks the first of five straight that UC Davis will play on the road.
• After Tuesday's matchup, the Aggies will travel to face Cal State Bakersfield for three games starting on Feb. 24... The Aggies then take on Stanford - currently ranked No. 2 nationally by Baseball America - on Feb. 28.
• UC Davis' 2012 schedule is comprised of large stretches of home games... The Aggies will play seven straight on the road Mar. 29-Apr. 7 then another eight in a row away from Davis Apr. 20-May 2.
