UC DAVIS AT CAL, HOSTS BYU
UC Davis hits the road for the first road game of the 2010 season when they face Cal in a midweek matchup at Evans Diamond at 1:30 p.m.... The Aggies then return home to host Mountain West Conference opponent BYU in a three-game series beginning Thursday, Feb. 25... Thursday's game begins at 2:00 p.m. as will Friday's... Saturday's game will begin at 1:00 p.m.

SCOUTING CAL
The Golden Bears (3-0) are coming off three straight shutout victories over Southen Utah last weekend... Cal outscored Southern Utah 46-0 with a .449 team batting average... Freshman designated hitter Devin Rodriguez had an outstanding debut for the Golden Bears as he went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and an RBI double Friday... He finished the weekend going 6-for-11 with six RBI... Junior right-hander Kevin Miller will start on the mound Tuesday... He finished 2-3 last season with a 4.50 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 50.0 innings... As a team, Cal finished ninth in the Pac-10 in 2009 an overall record of 24-29 and a 9-15 conference record... Junior Mark Canha returns to lead the Bears after posting a .366 batting average with 12 home runs and 43 RBI a year ago... Cal's 2009 recruiting class was selected the 24th best in the nation by Collegiate Baseball newspaper... Head coach David Esquer is in his 11th season.

LAST MEETING: MAY 5, 2009
Cal used a four-run burst in the sixth inning to edge UC Davis 6-5 at Evans Diamond... Ty Kelly hit a three-run homerun in the third and the Aggies posted two more runs in the eighth but UC Davis fell just shy of the win... Cal used a homerun to start the sixth inning then had three doubles that led to two more runs... The final run came on a wild pitch. Justin Schafer and Scott Heylman led the Aggie offense with two hits and two runs while Kelly led all players with three RBI... Tom Briner picked up the loss and gave up four runs on seven hits through 5.1 innings.

SCOUTING BYU
BYU (0-3) dropped a three-game series to UC Riverside to open the 2010 season... Junior Ryan Bernal led the Cougar offense as he went 5-for-10 in the series with two runs, a double, a homerun and five RBI... BYU finished 30-24 overall and 14-8 in Mountain West Conference action in 2009 and were picked to finish fifth in the conference in 2010... Boyd's World collegiate baseball rankings selected BYU as having the 31st toughest schedule in the nation... Head Coach Vance Law is in his 11th season.

LAST MEETING: MARCH 8, 2008
UC Davis met BYU in one game as part of the River City Classic in Davis and the Cougars took an 11-8 win... Ryan Scoma had four hits and an RBI while Kyle Mihaylo had a three-run home run in the fourth inning and a double in the second inning... Trevor Fox pitched 6.0 innings as the Aggies' starter.

UC DAVIS WINS SERIES AGAINST UTAH 2-1
UC Davis started the 2010 season by claiming two games in the season-opening series against Utah... Sophomore left-hander Dayne Quist pitched a complete game and gave up only two hits Friday while striking out seven... David Popkins led the Aggie offense after nearly hitting for the cycle... Popkins doubled in the second inning, then hit a two-run home run in the fourth before adding a single in the bottom of the sixth... In the first game of a doubleheader Saturday, Utah capitalized on five Aggie errors to take a 7-1 win but UC Davis rebounded to win the next game 6-1... Justin Schafer hit a perfect 4-for-4 and scored two runs while Matthew Lewis earned his first win of the year after striking out five and giving up only one run in 3.2 innings.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH PETERS:
"I thought our pitching was good all weekend [against Utah]. Strikes were consistent and we manned the zone and didn't walk many. All of our guys did a pretty good job of commanding the strike zone and that's one thing we really struggled with last year. I was happy with the way we pitched."

DEBUT WEEKEND
Four Aggie newcomers made their UC Davis debuts against Utah... True freshman Seth Batty started in left field in the second game Saturday and was 1-for-3 with one run... Paul Politi returned after redshirting the 2009 season to start at third base in all three games... Politi was 2-for-7 on the weekend with two doubles and three RBI... Redshirt freshman Kevin Grove started at right field for UC Davis in the second game Saturday and was 0-for-3... Justin Andrade stepped in as a pinch runner in the first game Saturday.

COMING UP NEXT
UC Davis continues a five-game homestand with matchups with Nevada Monday, Mar. 1 at 2:30 p.m. and Stanford Wednesday, Mar. 3 at 2:00 p.m.... UC Davis and Sacramento State will then renew their annual Causeway Cup rivalry with a three-game series beginning Mar. 5.
