RHP Spencer Koopmans (0-1) vs. LHP Tyler Nurdin (0-0), 11 a.m. (PST)
RHP Evan Wolf (1-0) vs. RHP Vince Wheeland (0-1)
The Aggies hit the road for the first time in 2013, traveling to face Oklahoma State for the first meeting between the programs.
UC Davis enters the weekend batting .335, just one of two Big West teams above .300 (UC Irvine, .354)... The Aggies have a league-best 109 hits, 72 runs and 21 doubles.
3B Paul Politi brings a 19-game hitting streak into the Oklahoma State series after hitting in the final 10 games of 2012 and all nine games this season.
B/DH Nick Lynch is t-2nd in the Big West in hits (14) while Politi and OF Mike Mazzara share the conference lead in doubles (5).
RHP Matt Cordy already has two saves... As a team, UC Davis only had seven last year.
Politi and Lynch are the only Aggies to have started all nine games this season.
RHP Spencer Koopmans is averaging nearly a strikeout an inning (13 K's, 13.1 inn.)
UC Davis' five wins have been distributed amongst five different pitchers.
Matt Vaughn is in his second season as head coach for the Aggies but is in his 21st year with the program overall... The 1992 UC Davis alum pitched for the Aggies from 1989-92, then stayed on as an assistant and associate head coach... Besides serving as the head coach, he is also the pitching coach... Vaughn directed the Aggies to a 27-30 overall record and a 12-12 (5th place) mark in the Big West in 2012... He is 31-34 overall.
Josh Holliday is in his first season with the Cowboys, having joined the program after three years as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt... He's also been on staffs at North Carolina State, Georgia Tech and Arizona State before returning to his alma mater last June... Holliday is the first former Cowboys player to serve as Oklahoma State's head coach.
A BRIEF LOOK AT OKLAHOMA STATE
The Cowboys opened the year by taking two of three at New Mexico before returning home to sweep a doubleheader from Alcorn State and then take three from NJIT.
RHP Tanner Krietemeier leads the team with a .414 average while INF Robbie Rea is close behind (.407)... As a team, the Cowboys are hitting .301 and have already hit seven home runs.
RHP Randy McMurry has one of those roundtrippers and has a team-high 10 RBI's.
RHP Jon Perrin (2-0, 1.64) is of to a strong start for Oklahoma State.... RHP Jason Hursh (1-0, 2.08) already has a complete game to his credit after shutting out NJIT in an 11-1, seven-inning victory last Saturday.
The Cowboys finished 32-25 last year, including posting a 24-7 home record.
ALL-BIG WEST RETURNERS
UC Davis returns a pair of All-Big West honorees in senior 3B Paul Politi and junior 1B/DH Nick Lynch.
Politi earned the honor after being the only Aggie to start all 57 games and leading UC Davis in average (.346), hits (79), RBI's (32), doubles (13) and home runs (3).
Politi brings a 10-game hitting streak into the opener after ending the 2012 season on a tear.
Lynch made his first season with the Aggies a big one, starting 40 games, primarily from the designated hitter position.
He hit .302 with a .450 slugging percentage - the latter placing him among the Big West leaders... Lynch also had eight doubles, a triple and four homeruns.
The Aggies also had two other All-Big West honorees in LHP Anthony Kupbens and C Scott Kalush, both who graduated.
SAN JOSE STATE REVISITED
The Aggies erupted for 22 runs and 23 hits in last week's 22-4 win over San Jose State which, ironically, was officially a come-from-behind victory after the Spartans scored a pair of runs in the first inning... But UC Davis responded with three in the first, two in the second and then later had a nine-hit, nine-run seventh inning to blow the game open.
OF John Williams collected two triples, a double, four RBI's and scored four runs to lead an offensive attack that also saw 3B Paul Politi and 1B Nick Lynch pick up four hits as well.
Politi's sharper liner to shortstop in the first inning resulted in his first hit of the day and extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
RHP Paul Parucha came on in relief of starter RHP Zach William and pitched 2.1 innings to pick up the win... He had four strikeouts among the nine batters he faced.
The Aggies also had seven batters hit by pitches which eclipsed the previous record of six set against San Jose State in 1991.
The hits and runs challenged school records of 26 runs against Pacific (Ore.) in 1999 and Lewis & Clark in 1975, and 26 hits against Pacific (Ore.) in that same game.
AGGIES PICKED EIGHTH IN BIG WEST PRESEASON POLL
UC Davis was picked to finish ninth in this year's Big West Preseason Poll conducted among the league's head coaches... The Aggies, who were fifth in the 2012 final standings, were voted ninth in last year's preseason poll.
Cal State Fullerton received nine first-place votes and was the clear favorite for this season's banner with 99 points while UC Irvine (one first-place vote) was second with 82 points... Long Beach State (75 pts), Cal Poly (68) and UC Santa Barbara (58) round out the top five.
Big West newcomer Hawai'i (57), UC Riverside (38), Cal State Northridge (34), UC Davis (25) and Pacific (14) occupy the final spots.
STRONG AT THE START AND MIDDLE
UC Davis has outscored its opponents 14-7 in the first inning so far and has scored in its first at-bats in eight of nine games... Opponents, meanwhile, have scored six times in the first inning.
The Aggies have been explosive in the fourth through seventh innings, tallying 10, 13, 11 and 15 runs, respectively, in those frames.
UC Davis has been outscored 9-0 in the ninth inning, the only it has yet to score a run.
POLITI'S STREAK AT A GLANCE
3B Paul Politi carries a 19-game hitting streak into this weekend's series and is batting .361 so far... He batted .500 (18 for 36) during the 10 games that started the streak... Overall, Politi's hitting .431 (31 for 72) during the streak.
He had seven multi-hit games during the 2012 portion of the streak and has three this year.
Greg Morris' 30-game hitting streak in 1993 is the school record.
WOLF HOWLS TO END AGGIES' SKID
RHP Evan Wolf brought UC Davis' three-game losing streak to a halt Monday while also helping the Aggies salvage the final game of its four-game set against Utah.
Wolf turned in 7.0 innings while allowing scattering six hits and just two earned runs... He gave up three runs over the first two innings before closing down Utah until yielding to the bullpen in the eighth.
PATTERSON MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT
San Joaquin Delta College transfer 2B Steven Patterson hasn't wasted much time making his presence felt with the Aggies... He's already hitting .385, third-best on the team, with 10 hits in 26 at-bats while picking up 6 RBI's.
Patterson's already collected three games with two hits each and has scored seven runs.
He was a California Community College Baseball Coaches Association All-America selection last season.
CAN'T SPELL KOOPMANS WITHOUT A "K"
RHP Spencer Koopmans has notched 13 strikeouts in 13.1 innings and carries a 2.03 ERA, best among the starting rotation.
He picked up six K's in his first start against Washington and then added seven more last weekend against Utah.
Four of his strikeouts have been looking.
FINDING FIRST BASE THE HARD WAY
UC Davis set a school record last year by getting hit by pitches 100 times and it looks like 2013 isn't letting up too much.
The Aggies have been hit 16 times in nine games, a number that is somewhat skewed by the school-record shellacking they took against San Jose State on Feb. 20... That's when Spartan pitchers found various parts of UC Davis players a school-record seven times.
1B/DH Nick Lynch has picked up the most bruises this year, having been plunked four times already... DH Tino Lipson has been hit three times.
LOOKING TO IMPROVE THE DEFENSE
The Aggies have committed 21 errors through their first nine games including 10 errors over a three-game stretch against Washington, San Jose State and Utah.
They've had four games with at least three errors including a season-high four twice against Utah.
Ironically, though, UC Davis is 4-2 when it's committed at least two errors in a game.
