SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATE
The Hornets enter the week with a 21-14 overall record, but have lost three of their last four following a 12-game winning streak – the second-longest in the history of the program… Sacramento State lost two-of-three to Western Athletic Conference rival Grand Canyon over the weekend in Phoenix following sweeps of Northern Colorado, New Mexico State, and Seattle, to open league play… junior infielder Rhys Hoskins paces the offense, batting .363 with 22 runs scored, 11 doubles, six home runs, and 30 RBI, while slugging .619 on the year with a .452 on-base percentage… three regulars are batting better than .300 on the year to help the Hornets hit .275 collectively… freshman right-hander Jared Paderez, Tuesday’s scheduled starter, is 1-2 with a 3.25 ERA in four starts (eight appearances overall), holding opposing hitters to a .257 average this season… opponents are hitting just .251 against the Sacramento State staff, which has combined for a 3.37 ERA in  35 games.

SERIES NOTES
According to records that date back to the 1961 season, the Aggies are 79-106-4 all-time against Sacramento State, and 7-11 in 18 meetings (3-6 at home) since their first full-fledged Division I season in 2008… the Hornets have won the last seven meetings with UC Davis, including a sweep of three mid-week contests in 2013 by the scores of 14-0 and 4-3 at Dobbins Stadium and a 6-4 win at John Smith Field… the Aggies’ last win in the series (and the last victory at Dobbins Stadium) against Sacramento State came on Feb. 20, 2011, when UC Davis took the second game of a doubleheader by the score of 1-0 after falling 4-3 in the opener… eight of the 18 Division I contests between the two have been decided by two runs or fewer.

THE WEEK THAT WAS...
UC Davis closed out a busy week that saw the Aggies drop a heartbreaker on the road at Stanford before returning to the friendly confines of Dobbins Stadium to take two-of-three from Long Beach State over the weekend. Sunken Diamond was the site of sunken hearts for UC Davis fans as the host Cardinal rallied with three, two-out runs in the eighth, erase a two-run deficit, and edge the Aggies, 7-6. Steven Patterson and Spencer Brann each finished with two hits to help power UC Davis, which fell behind 4-1 after three innings and was held to without a hit until the fourth when the Aggies rallied for five unanswered runs to take the lead.

A season-high 18 hits got UC Davis' weekend off to a good start as the Aggies rallied for three runs in the eighth to take the opener with Long Beach State, 7-5, ending a four-game losing skid. Eight of the nine UC Davis starters finished with hits -- five of those with multiple hits -- including three apiece from Patterson, Nick Lynch, and Brann. After falling victim to a two-hit shutout in game two, the Aggies' bats responded with another 14 hits in Sunday's finale, sending 12 hitters to the plate and scoring runs as part of a decisive third inning. Five more Aggies finished with multiple hits while freshman Mark Cardinalli (two-run double) and sophomore Tanner Bily (three-run home run) drove in their first runs of the season.

LOOKING AHEAD...
Following Tuesday's game with Sacramento State, UC Davis hits the road for three games at Big West rival UC Riverside beginning Thursday (April 17) and running through Saturday (April 19) due to the Easter holiday, with first pitches scheduled for 6 p.m., 6 p.m., and 1 p.m. For those unable to make the trip to Southern California, the final two games of the series with the Highlanders (Friday and Saturday) will be featured as part of the Big West's broadcast package online on ESPN3.com and on mobile devices via the WatchESPN app.

CAUSEWAY CUP UPDATE
UC Davis clinched its second straight, and sixth overall, Causeway Cup presented by ScholarShare with the women’s tennis team’s victory over Sacramento State back on Feb. 23, and lead the overall race by the score of 51.25-28.75. The Hornets, however, have won the last three head-to-head meetings with the Aggies in softball (5-0 on March 4) and women’s gymnastics (March 7 and March 22). Beginning with Tuesday’s game, UC Davis and Sacramento State will clash five more times this season in baseball (April 15 and May 13), men’s golf (April 18-20), and men’s and women’s track and field (April 19), with 20 more points up for grabs.
