SERIES NOTES
...
UC Davis leads the all-time series with Saint Mary’s at the Division I level by a 9-5 count, including a 5-2 mark at Dobbins Stadium… Tuesday’s contest will serve as the “rubber game” of the three-game series between the two schools after the Gaels posted a 5-1 win in Moraga on Feb. 20 and the Aggies rebounded with their 4-1 triumph on April 2 in Davis… the loss earlier this year ended a three-game UC Davis winning streak in the series, but the Aggies have won eight of the last 11 meetings dating back to 2009… UC Davis has won two straight at Dobbins Stadium, and five of the last six.

THE WEEK THAT WAS...

Riding the high of their first Big West series win of the year, the Aggies started the week with a mid-week loss to Causeway rival Sacramento State, 15-7, despite three hits by Adam Young and five RBI (including a grand slam) by Brian Ruhm. It was the eighth straight win the series by the Hornets, who peppered Aggies pitching with 19 hits – the most by an opponent against UC Davis this season. A seven-run fourth was the key for Sacramento State, which took the lead for good on a sac fly in the third before sending 10 batters to plate an inning later to put the game away.

Over the weekend, the Aggies were swept in their Big West series at UC Riverside, despite huge rallies that came up just short in the first two games before the Highlanders rallied late to steal game three and complete the sweep. In the opener, UCR scored 10 of its 12 runs in the first three innings before the pitching staff settled down to retire nine of 10 at one point and set the stage for a seven-run sixth that brought UC Davis to within 10-8. Single runs in the seventh and eighth helped the Highlanders hold on.

In game two, a five run fifth broke open a tight game and gave UCR a 7-1 lead, but three runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth for the Aggies made it a one-run game, but that would be as close as UC Davis would get. In Saturday’s finale, Tanner Bily and Kevin Barker drove in runs in the second inning for the early Aggies lead, but Cody Hough’s RBI single in the fifth broke up the shutout and Alex Rubanowitz’s two-run single in the sixth keyed a three-run inning that completed the comeback for UCR.

VERSUS SAINT MARY’S SO FAR…
In the first meeting, junior Nick Lynch slugged his first home run of the year to give the Aggies the early lead and reached base three times on the day, but the Gaels sent 11 batters to the plate as part of a five-run fourth inning en route to the 5-1 win on day one of the Gael Invitational in Moraga. Kevin Barker, Mason Novak, and Izaak Silva, also had hits for the Aggies, who eventually won their final three games of the tournament against Portland (twice) and Kansas State.

UC Davis flipped the script in the next meeting at Dobbins Stadium on April 2 in a game postponed 24 hours due to rain. The Aggies took full advantage of a pair of defensive miscues by Saint Mary’s en route to the 4-1 victory, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the fourth and seventh innings, while five pitchers combined on a five-hitter. Evan Heptig’s RBI single gave UC Davis a lead it would not relinquish and was followed by Seth Batty’s RBI single for a 2-0 advantage. A hit batter and sacrifice fly later in the game gave the Aggies some much-needed breathing room. Steven Patterson finished 2-for-3 to pace the UC Davis offense while Spencer Koopmans earned the win on the predetermined staff day.

LOOKING AHEAD...

Following Tuesday's game with Saint Mary’s, the Aggies welcome UC Irvine to Dobbins Stadium for a three-game series to close out a four-game homestand. It will be the last chance for a while to catch UC Davis at home as the Aggies embark on an eight-game roadtrip beginning on May 2 with a Big West series at Cal State Northridge, a non-conference series at Gonzaga, and single games at Nevada and Sacramento State – the latter to be played at Raley Field in Sacramento.
