DAVIS, Calif. -- In helping lift his team to its third Big West Conference series victory of the season, UC Davis sophomore left-hander Robert Garcia picked up his first career conference player of the week on Monday following a stellar performance in the series finale against UC Santa Barbara.
Garcia joins teammate Orlando Razo as Aggie pitchers who have been honored by the conference office this season after Razo twice earned the award back on Feb. 27 and April 17. The three weekly awards bestowed upon UC Davis pitchers this season are the most since Dayne Quist (twice) and Tom Briner combined for three in 2012.
The Manteca, Calif., native finished with a career-high 11 strikeouts and issued no walks in a, 2-0, Aggie victory, as the Gauchos managed only a second-inning double and singles in the third and eighth innings.
Garcia fanned at least one batter in eight of his nine innings, including 10 of the swinging variety, besting his previous career high of nine set against Air Force on March 24 of last season and matched against Utah Valley on Feb. 24 earlier this year. Garcia retired 16 consecutive UC Santa Barbara batters from the third to eighth innings, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position for the contest.
Winners of three of their last four, the Aggies return to the diamond on Tuesday (May 9), heading south to take on former conference rival Pacific at Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
