In just four years as the Aggies head coach, 37-year-old Brian Fogel has put his stamp on an Aggie basketball program that is respected both at the conference and national levels. Fogel emphasizes team play over individual glory and maintains a philosophy that has consistently seen UC Davis ranked among the nation’s top defensive teams. His .694 winning percentage stands as the best in school history for coaches with more than one season at the helm.

Last season Fogel led UC Davis to a 15-12 record, 12-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. It marked his fourth straight season with 15-plus victories and gave him 77 in his career. Entering the 2002-03 season, Fogel holds a 77-34 (.694) career mark, 61-27 (.693) in conference play.

Fogel is in his seventh year overall after serving three years as the top assistant to former head coach Bob Williams. Fogel was named the program’s 21st head coach on May 1, 1998 after Williams left to take over the coaching duties at UC Santa Barbara.

His transition from assistant to head coach was seamless, as the Aggies followed up their national championship season with another outstanding year. Fogel guided the Aggies to a 22-6 record, a berth in the NCAA Division II West Region Semifinals, and a championship in the school’s first year in the 12-team California Collegiate Athletic Association. UC Davis won the CCAA, regarded as one of the toughest Division II conferences in the country, with an 18-4 record.

Fogel’s leadership helped maintain a string of six consecutive 20-plus win seasons that began in 1994-95, enjoyed five straight league championships and six consecutive NCAA West Regional appearances. The Aggies are 152-51 (.749) since Fogel joined the staff in 1995.

Fogel’s coaching career began in 1989, after his graduation from Sonoma State that same year. An All-Northern California Athletic Conference player for the Cossacks who is also the school’s all-time three-point leader, he helped coach his alma mater when it won an NCAC title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1989.

After assisting at UC Berkeley in 1991, he moved on to San Francisco State, where the Gators improved their season win total from seven to 21 in the three years he was there. The nationally ranked Gators culminated that improvement with a conference championship and a regional playoff appearance in 1994. Fogel’s first head coaching assignment came the following season at Skyline College in San Bruno, where he compiled a 16-14 record, advancing to the Northern California Regional Championships in 1995.

Fogel was raised in southern California where he was a high school teammate with current San Antonio Spur and three-time NBA World Champion Steve Kerr. He earned his undergraduate degree in physical education before graduating from Saint Mary’s College in 1992 with his master’s in health, physical education and recreation.

He and his wife, Kerry, live in nearby Dixon with their daughters Katrina (8) and Brooke (4).
